Location: Rogers, MN | Wondering what the difference is between a Jake and a Grandma. Trying to pick up as many good trolling baits as I can. I can get a good deal on a few Grandmas but have only fished Jakes. They look so much the same.

| 9" vs 10" or 13" vs 14" ? Well never mind.. you say want good trolling baits ...get all of them. Jakes and Grandmas run different but both are productive |

Location: Iowa | Grandma is thinner and IMO is a more versatile casting crank...you can straight real, light rip or really rip the bait to make them do some crazy things...for trolling, haven't used either very much...jakes usually have a rattle, grandmas don't |

| most of my Grandmas will run a few feet deeper on 80' of line out, as mentioned they don't have a rattle...its a different vibration ...definitely times you have both out trolling and the Grandma will get 100% of action... and vice versa.....Jakes will take more abuse banging rocks. If you like to troll I'd get some! |

I have always used more jakes than Grandmas, but the biggest 2 fish (53" and 54") in my boat have come on (9" and 13") Grandmas.
I find the Grandmas definitely run a littler deeper and tend to snag up more than jakes. Their thinner profile makes for a little tighter wobble. They are not as buoyant and my experience has been when they snag, they are tougher to get off. Jakes pop off easier and quicker.
To account for this, I will typically run Grandmas either short in the propwash over the middle or on the outside to structure whenever possible. Also I don't let as much line out when I'm fishing up here on LOTW. Often 5 feet or more less with a Grandma than I will with a jake.
Great trolling bait that you should have some of in your tackle box. |

And all for one trip per year. Can't wait to get up there. Almost have the new boat all rigged up. Got a bunch of new cranks. Might try painting some for fun, too. I'll see you in a few weeks. |
