| I often wondered if there was a fishable population in Crane Lake and it seems there might be based on the fact that these guys caught 3 including a beast that looks all of the 58 1/2 they claim.

| The claim of a 28" girth is a sign their measurements are off. That is not a fat fish and the way he's holding it is not a 57lb monster. |

I doubt the fish had a 28" girth but it looks long as all get up and I assume they used the Rapala measure behind them.
Does anyone know where to see this video? |

Statements like this beg the question: Who really cares? |

This guy did nearly everything the musky community wants. Measures and photo'd on a board, good equipment, and released. The only quibble that could be made would be laying it on the carpet. But beyond that, bravo to the guy.
Looks pretty legit to me, but I couldn't possibly care less. It's a great fish. |

Location: Waukee, IA | I think that using two terrible pictures as evidence that the girth measurement is wrong is pretty short sighted. Sure it doesn't look that big around, but most people who have seen fish with a 28" girth saw it on a fish 6-10 inches shorter than this example. |

| I am guessing a 28 inch girth looks pretty small compared to many fishermen's girth:) |

| Super long fish just wow. Heck of an accomplishment but a state record it isn't', 28" girth not a chance. By comparison http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sJrlJD43zOc. Filmed girth measurement that is totally legit.
Now which do you think looks fatter laying on its side?

Location: Hayward, Wisconsin | While not wishing to debate thegirth of this giant, let me just ask if anyone of you naysayers have seen a fish of this caliber? Girth is the largest body dimension, regardless of where it is. In this case it is just behind the huge head. While none of us were there, I would say that the method used to obtain that girth measurement is problematical and would be unacceptable for record application. Having said that, had this fish been killed, a "proper" girth measurement could have and would have been made.
The Modern Day World Record was 58 inches long with a 29 inch girth. The head of this fish would be very similar to that. Personally, I have no problem with the claimed girth measurement, but as easily noted in the photo of the fish lying down, the girth gets continuously smaller a short distance behind the head to the tail, indicating that this fish would be a good "poster child" of reasoning why length/girth formula's just can't and don't work for anything other than an "estimate" of weight and is cases such as this would greatly overestimate fish weight.
As I have stated many, many times in the past, "If you don't weigh it, you shouldn't say it".
Let's all just be happy that this giant was released to give another lucky angler a shot at a fish of a lifetime...Congrats to the angler and Thanks as well!! |

| The angler obviously knew just how special of a fish this is, as he pointed it out to his father and had him look at the fish in the water in case it got off. So kudos to him for releasing it.
However, when you make statements like this: “I knew what the state record was. I knew this fish was bigger. But I don’t want to be the guy who’s got his name down for a state record and for killing that fish.” You're basically fueling your own fire..
Super (released) fish. Great story behind it. Wouldn't have been the state record.

| An amazing catch, hats off to the lucky anglers.
I recall from having heard Larry speak a few years back at our banquet, that that there has always been a nascent population in Vermillion. I think he showed us a photo from the 1930s or 1940s of a decent musky being held by an angler. Given how interconnected the many lakes are in that part of MN, it makes you wonder what other Monsters are available to those who are willing to fish for the needle in the haystack.

| What's also very impressive about the story is that they caught two others that day. A 3-fish day on a VERY low density body of water... they had it dialed in! |

We've been catching Muskies much farther down river than Crane(LOTW) that are very spotted, for a number of years. I know one has to be careful in terms of qualifying a fish as a certain 'type' or 'strain', but the number of spotted fish seems to have greatly increased in the areas we fish. I'm sure some of the influent rivers have/had populations of spotted Muskies but it would be nice to catch a tagged one further downstream to verify the origin. Cool stuff! |

It probably could have been handled better, but I think we can all do better, at times.
looks like the fish is pretty beat up, with rug rash or something.
Congrats on a fish of a lifetime!!! |

#2 - the holier than thou types here questioning the girth measurement is one of the main reasons I have given up on musky fishing. It used to be FUN! Congratulating people about catches, smiling faces in pictures, just celebrating the catch. Now it's grim faces (meaning = I know I'm good at this), accusations of lying and cheating and just general keyboard hero stuff. I get it that it's a musky, but it's still a FISH!
I guess it's just the direction the world is heading now.
Sorry - #3 AWESOME fish!!!

Location: NE Wisconsin | I am not saying it wasn't an awesome fish. What I am saying, I am fed up with anglers knowing what the record is and adjusting the girth numbers to fit the formula to break the record and releasing the fish. If you KNOW you have a record, and want to CLAIM you broke it, keep the fish. As Larry says " you shouldn't say it unless you weigh it!!!!!!!" in front of many witnesses. Awesome fish....but maybe not as awesome as claimed.

| Well, I have never seen a fish that big in person period and I am quite sure 95% of the armchair critics here havent either. Its a huge fish. Congrats to the lucky angler!
And comparing these pics to some other pics you saw of a "legit" 28" girth fish isnt accurate either.
All I care about is 1) they have nice pictures of a huge fish that is ultra rare and 2) they released it
Too many pricks out there nitpick photos but would you be happy if all these fish were dead to prove/disprove your point? SMH |
