You're going on that one trip you look forward to all year...that you've done year after year or now for the first time. How many baits are you bringing?

Ten to twenty just to be safe, and probably will throw less than 10 different.

1000th post!

A good 50.

Probably use 5. May play around with a few more on a slow day.

I doubt that I own this many lures, but can absolutely see this for someone who casts and trolls

Bring A LOT of different baits on the trip... because you just never know, and work out of a smaller box (or handful of Plano's) for each day or outing.

Yup

I bring every bait I own. They are not all out but I have them, (maybe in a box in the truck) I have had several trips where I had to borrow lures because the bite was on (what I left home). Never again.

Over the many years of musky fishing I have ended up with well over 200 baits and it is one of my passions to add 5 - 10 new baits each year whether I need them or not. For a one week trip I will typically figure out what group of 100 to actually bring based on time of the year, anticipated weather, fishing reports etc. Out of that 100 I will decide the 50 or so to put in my tackle box that I bring on the boat each day. Having choices and options and making decisions like this is one of the joys of musky fishing.

If going to the Larry and know I will only be trolling I take about 20.
If I'm going out for an evening of casting at home I take about 25 and use 3 or 4.
If going up north or anywhere I don't know what to expect I will have 300 in the truck (not the boat )

edit: I should have read the one week part

The Answer seems obvious: 100+ for sure.

Personally i've been collecting lures a long time, but over the course of a week a lot of things can happen! Weather can change, patterns can change, ect. I see some guys griping about 100+ lures and its way too many. Not for a trip like this, you bring 10 lures for a week? You kidding me right!?!?! You might only throw 5-10 of these lures but that's not what we're saying, be prepared for anything - the best that you are able to be.

Tight lines.

I have 200-250 lures and when traveling I tend to pack up ~50-60 to have with. When I go out on the boat I bring about half of those if its my boat and if its someone elses, then I will bring 1 plano or two filled.

When going on a trip you should be able to downselect a large number of baits based on time of year, anticipated water clarity, bite, etc. But I still always throw in a couple odd balls just in case... Never know when a random fall day they are tight lipped and only want that 4-6" spring lure

We always bring waaaayyyy too many baits and end up using around 10 or so, but you never know when that one bait you have sitting at home will be the "magic" bait and you'll regret leaving it at home...

big games, cranes and such lips break a lot in the net or if you hit a rock .. Heck sometimes ill even wear out a few bucktails (some of the flashabou "ties" have gone downhill-IMO) ....Local water I often bring 4-5 baits.....If I'm going a week heck ya I'll bring 100 + baits...takes up very little room and I want replacements for my hot dozen

Hundreds..... why leave them at home when they could be stowed away somewhere in the boat, truck, cabin, etc... in case you want to bring something out that didn't make it into the original line-up in the small lure assortment that you assume you will use the entire trip.
I could probably get by with 10 baits but I don't want to. I want to have 10 baits and 3 diffrent sizes and 6 different colors for each size for all 10 of those baits. That is 180 baits right there. Now throw in the odd stuff that you only have 1 or 2 to try... the numbers can add up quickly. Better have a good tackle storage system.

How many differnt styles of baits are there? Then different colors, weighted, suspending, size of blades. Come on your talking a week of fishing. Thats what 2 boxes of baits.........
I agree why leave them at home, if there's room bring them.

As a former bait addict, this thread is pretty amusing. I've always said that it's better to need and have than to need and not have. That being said, I'll forget about the "number" of baits I bring, focusing more on the "what".Certain bodies of water may have some idiosyncrasies that will dictate a certain style/ color but typically the standards will work anywhere the green fish swim. Being able to use different techniques with the same bait is also a plus. For example , many rubber baits can be worked top to bottom as well as spinnerbaits. Versatility eliminated a lot of baits from the boat. Casting vs. trolling is another factor. Many baits will do double duty. I laugh at guys changing baits all the time , because EXPERIENCE has taught me........WHEN they eat, THIS is what they DO eat. Pretty simple formula. Have confidence in your location and presentation and let the casts fly!!!

Seriously, I probably have around 300 lures and since I fish alone a lot I'd bet there are at least 80-100 in my boat at any given time....But with that said, I would imagine I've used maybe 20-30 of those 100 Lures in the last 2 yrs of fishing.

How many baits you bring vs. how many baits actually see the water for a lot of us are two different things. In a couple of weeks I'll be leaving for Canada for the tenth straight year. Every time I've brought way more lures than was needed. For trolling no matter the trip I need basically about 9-10 different lures to reach all the depths'. Depending on the water being fished (maximum depth in the area, water color, weather condition and seasonally) this dictates to a great degree just how deep will be need to be checked.

I like some of the things Jonesi says about learning from his experience and my experience and others says at least on this trip, at this time of year I only need to bring 4 lures. I will of course have several back ups of each. For the last 4-5 years we have landed hundreds fish of at least 8 different species muskies included. These 4 different lures, 3 for trolling, all are used to check different depths and speeds and only 1 for jigging or casting.

I fish with a guy who enjoys switching baits a lot but while he's spending some of his time switching baits I plod along with the same, tiered, not hot old lures year after year and nothing changes our success. However this year Im excited about adding a new lure... to my line up, what do you think?

It is. I believe Jerry is making a point there.

I pretty much bring all the baits that I have, or at least pretty much what fits in my boat, for the most part.

When I went to Canada, I didn't bring ALL my Pounders and other rubber, I brought a Pounder or two and a small handful of other rubber, all my bucktails, all my cranks, all my topwater. I brought all I could bring of the stuff I figured I'd most likely be using.

If I own it, why not bring it? I'd hate to be on "the" trip of the year and be wishing I had the bait I left at home.

My lakewoods travel wherever i do. As for when I'm on the water, I'd say usually have 30 or so baits on my pedestal pal and another 20 to 30 in boxes. Not that I'd ever throw 60 baits in a day, but ya never know what I'll feel like throwing. If action is hot, I like to throw some new baits. Best time to build confidence.

I take all the "A team" lures everywhere I go. I take a box of backups for the A team lures, because God knows if you only have one of them, a pike will wreck it, or you'll whack it on a rock, or a 38"er will bend it up so bad it doesn't run right anymore. I can't think of much worse than being in Canada on Day 2 and now the hot lure is busted, and you don't have another one. Oh, wait, yes I can. The only thing worse than that would be having another one sitting in a box 1,200 miles away.

The rest is all dependent on where I'm going and when. Dark water, muddy water, clear water, pea soup... Different lures. Some lakes have a great topwater bite. Some lakes the fish like bright colors, sometimes it's all black. Sometimes it's just because I have 6 fish on this lure on this end of this lake, and if I fish here, I'm throwing this.

It's not as complicated as it sounds. The more times you fish a lake the more you know what to throw there and the easier it is to look at another similar lake and not have to wonder what to do.

I leave more at home than I usually take. Thankfully I am getting better at knowing what I can leave home.

I to like to bring a lot of lures with me and tend to use around 10, but i do like having multiple colors of the same bait so that takes up some room in the tackle box. Especially different color blades on my bucktails. yesterday was a perfect example of this, I had a really hot firetiger spinner bait that's been out producing everyone in my boat the past month, caught a mid 30's yesterday and really bent it up and i ended up snapping a wire trying to bend it back. So i put on a bucktail i've had in my tackle box that i've never used in 2 years and 5 minutes later lost what looked to be a new PB for me on the river. Only lure of the day that i didnt put the file too! Stupid mistake!!!! So it goes to show, the lure that hardly gets used could be the one they want.

You always have a good idea of what should work or has worked at that time of year in the past but you never know what conditions you might get dealt. I mainly fish a reservoir and the water level could be down 15' so that puts all the weedbeds and a lot of the rock structure up on the bank. So very quickly you can think you're going to throw bucktails and jerkbaits but end up working plastics deep or trolling. Then there's been those times when the "I'll never throw that lure" lure has saved the day. Depends on the destination also. Mille Lacs in November I'll only bring plastics and cranks and leave most of the other stuff at home. Other desinations or times of the year I'll bring everything. Our first April trip on one particular lake I only need to bring a suick.

Most of the time fisherman don't give lures enough time to become effective. If you have confidence in certain lures you will throw it more often. Iam not saying you should not try different baits on a good area and work it hard. But iam strong believer that boat partners should not start the day off throwing the same baits. Unless you know the fish are hot on a pattern. Trying out every bait you own in a day is just crazy. Building confidence in a few good lures is much smarter. Not to say I have not collected my share of lures in the last 45 years. they mostly are hung up in my garage. TOO many guys are into owning hundreds of baits.

being a former bait addict I'd agree, let's be honest, most musky fishermen on this site probably catch 15-30 muskies a season..ok so if you have 300 baits, a very large percentage don't catch a fish for an entire season..... heck a majority of most guys lures have never caught a fish....I still love baits, don't get me wrong, but the more experienced you get, you'll realize it is more about the where and when, then what... I use to have 20 some Hughes Rivers.. yah, I think I caught one fish on those... Less can equal more ... when I jump in a friends boat often times I take 2 rods, with a lure on each, I don't need to MuskyBoy anyone these days! l o l.

There is a difference between bringing a certain collection of 100 plus baits on a one week trip versus what you use on a particular day of the trip. The question was how many baits to bring for a one week trip ... I would guess those of us who bring a large collection for the week still focus on a small number each day. Having options during the week doesn't mean you are trying out every bait you own each day.

before every long trip i typically organize all of my baits for the conditions, water temps, clarity etc...I take about 50 along. Maybe use 10 the whole time and spend most of my efforts throwing 2-3 specifically.

My buddy spent a month on LOTW this past summer. Some time was spent walleye fishing with the family though. I would say about 2/3 of the time was spent musky fishing seriously. Every musky he caught in that month was on the same bait. I was there with him for his last week and he caught 11 muskies over 40 inches that week. Granted, he threw that bait 90% of the time, but why switch if you have confidence in it. Like Bill Sandy says, "a lot of times I tie on a bucktail and fish it until it falls apart. It's not necessarily the bait you throw, it's how you work the bait."

When guys say, oh it was a fire tiger Suick pattern on LOTW last week. We couldn't get them to eat anything but fire tiger Suicks. I just laugh to myself. They just so happened to be throwing fire tiger Suicks during the feeding window. Can pretty much guarantee if they were throwing a buck tail in the same feeding window they would've caught fish too.

The guy in the front of the boat could be throwing a hotdog with hooks and he's going to catch/see fish during those windows.

With the high water this year on LOTW the feeding windows were more apparent to us than in previous years. We would go 4 hours without seeing a fish and then see 7 fish and catch 2 in a 20 minute span on one spot that didn't seem to be anything special. It was a crazy year!
