Do I just take out the 3 screws around the outside and it all comes off, and I pull the spool out like in the video?

I took the 3 screws out last weekend and it did not want to come off easy.

And yes, I did use the search feature and nothing was really clear.

Your link not working, and my D is up north so I can't quick check it for you, but yes that sounds right (removing the 3 screws - the outer ones). You may have to jiggle, turn, twist or otherwise play with it a bit to pop it apart, or depress the thumb bar so the set plate can pop free from the frame.

I think I had to press the thumb bar down to get it to release, but yeah pretty much 3 screws and it comes apart. Make sure you're removing the outer screws, I believe there is one towards the center, I don't know what that one does.

There are two screws in the center, they anchor the right side plate to the set plate.

Makes sense, I will push down on the thumb bar. Thanks guys.

Would you recommend 4 or 5 brakes out? I am leaning towards trying it with 4 first.

I allways use 3, on all my reels

It's different for all reels but for the D 3 works really well.

If I remember there are 3 brakes engaged from the factory. I played around adding more and less and decided 3 worked best for me.

Just remove the 3 screws and push the spool out, some are tight so just keep pushing and it will open up.
On all Shimano D Cacutta reels I set 4 of the 6 brakes on.
The factory has 3 on, with 4 on I never get any backlashes and I keep the spool tension knob just so the spool has no side play.
