I hate to tell you, as I just got back from Eagle Lake, but there was no pattern. We caught fish on everything from natural patterns (walleye, perch, silver baitfish) to the ugliest color combos (my new secret weapon ) on buck tails. Throw it all, every day, as the pattern changes day to day.
If you are looking for a general rule for buck tails, you can't go wrong with black n smoke, and then swapping over to black n orange at dusk (or low light conditions)...but again we had fish caught and moving on all kinds of stuff.
Crankbaits/Plastics go with Black/Orange, Gold or Silver (like on Grandmas/Jakes), or Perch Patterns. Every so often as it gets later in the season, some whites start working well, and if you are around turnover (I wouldn't think its there yet as water temps were 64 when i left) then mix in some chartreuse.
Keep it simple, and throw it all. Fish are moving around a lot, and patterns/spots change each day. Hit it all with everything and you'll run into fish. |

| Yeah, you should be fine. The lake should stabilize for a bit in the low/mid 60s, before it starts heading down again. Turnover won't happen til about 57/58 usually. Also, with such a big lake with different types of water, the whole lake won't turn at once so there's always somewhere good to fish. |

| Was on Eagle for the first time from Saturday to Wednesday. Right away on Saturday we were moving fish. On Sunday we went out with a guide and I hooked a 40+lb fish on about the sixth cast. I knew it was not hooked good but managed to keep it on for about 20-25 seconds. It did an awesome jump, the second time I brought it up to the boat we may have been able to net it if we just went for it but after about 3-4 second it darted under the boat and the hooks just popped out. Learned my lesson there, don't be afraid to tell the guide to just net it if you know a big fish is hooked poorly! We saw about 17 fish that day but none of the rest seemed interested in biting. The biggest I have ever landed is 51.5 and the second I saw this fish I knew it was in a whole different league. The guide said he thought it was 53 but I wouldn't be surprised if it was even bigger. He was noticeably shaking after the fact, that fish will definitely haunt me for a long time.
On Monday the cold front came in with a constant 20-35 mph NE wind. We saw quite a few fish on Monday and my wife lost a nice one on a slammer. Tuesday and Wednesday were very slow but my wife did manage a 40 in muskie and I got a 39inch Pike. On Tuesday evening when I was not paying attention and talking to my wife a monster hit my bucktail and knocked me over in the boat. I thought for sure I was going in the water and gonna lose my pole. I managed to stay in the boat but lost the fish, frustrating! Everyone I talked to up there was also struggling so it made me feel a little better. The fishing was slow this week so you know the lake is ready to blow up at any moment.

Location: Illinois | Sounds like you had a monster on! They're definitely in there. I have seen them, just never had the privilege of having one on my line. Hopefully that changes this year! |
