I currently have a tranx hg I use for throwing blades and big rubber and it works great, just after a 12 hour day my wrist is really sore from holding the big heavy setup throwing bulldawgs. My question is would a currado 300e with ej power handle hold up and be a good reel for chucking bulldawgs, I'll have it paired on a TI 9' xxh. It would be a lot lighter of a set up. Let me know what you guys think.

I am sure it would work fine. You may find your right arm would get wore out from the 25% more cranks. Give it a shot. Do you have a EJ or are you thinking of using one you already have?

If you have a EJ already give it a shot, if you do not see if you can borrow a buddies reel, or any reel with about 32 inch pick up per turn.

My HG has spoiled me to the point i dont use other reels for casting, but thats just me, everyone is different so give it a shot

IMHO No.... I have 2 EJ's and they are great reels but I do not see it standing up to pitching Mag Dawgs or Larger. You might be ablel to get away with it with Standard sized dawgs or smaller but I wouild not go any bigger than that...

One thing I have a problem with using my EJ with a power handle is that you have to make sure that the handle is in the down position before casting, If you try casting to hard with the handle up, it often will engage the reel during the cast and its not pretty. I'm used to it by now and i always make sure that i have the handle in the right position before casting. The weight of the power handle causes this. I'm actually thinking about putting a paddle handle on it just for this reason. I wouldnt want to see what a pounder would do to this reel.

Would the revo toro 60 or nacl in 6.4:1 gear ratio be better suited

Keeping the thumb bar pressed down on the cast eliminates most engagement issues. Also with practice you will stop getting backlashes for the most part. It will be hard on the reel, but all musky baits are. Expect to have to repair it from time to time. BR

If you feel the Tranx is too large, I would take a look at the Daiwa Saltist STTLW20H-C Levelwind Reel, the black one. It’s a little smaller but still built like a tank and has 35” IPT of pickup. I had one which I loved for big rubber, but as I only have two setups, 1 for WTD & Jerkbaits, and another for everything else, the lack of spool brake became too much of an issue for me so I got rid of it, but if I ever get a dedicated mag/pounder setup, I’ll be buying another one.

I never thought to keep the thumb bar down on each cast, I'll have to keep that in mind next time out. That would be great if that helps with engaging. Thanks

I dont think bringing in dawgs is the issue its casting and getting a back lash or early engagement that will hurt the reel.

the 300EJ is fine for smaller baits or top water but it is not a Dawg Reel, plus it has only one drag washer. Look at the Toro 60 in the 5 Gear or the Lexa 400 also in the 5 gear.

I think I've narrowed it down to the toro 60 in the 6.4:1 ratio for dawgs, it's half the weight of my tranx and have close to the same max drag. You think it will hold up alright? The tranx will be my blade reel. Just so I'm not always using such a heavy setup all day.

I use a 60 with the 6.4 and have had zero issues.
