I have a Shimano Compre 2 piece rod that I've never used. I'm bringing it to Canada tomorrow for a buddy to use for a few days, but it's locked up where the two pieces come together and the line guides are not lined up. Any suggestions on how to get it loose without wrecking it? I've tried banging the butt of the rod on the ground a few times...that didn't do anything.

You reminded me that I have a telescopic rod that after a week in Canada I couldn't retract either (for the 1st time). First thing I'm going to try is to ice the blank that has to slide in. Hoping that will shrink it just enough to get it to unlock itself. Careful use of a hair dryer along with ice might work too.

This one looks like it's stuck in halfway or something. It's an 8'6" rod that is about 8"2 right now as compared to another 8'6" rod I have. I'm scared to put a lot of force into trying to get it unstuck because I figure I'll break it. Maybe I'll run it to the shop that gave it to me as a warranty rod and have them give me a different one.

Had the same problem with my Okuma telescopic sticking what The Okuma guys told me that worked was have the flat of the butt of the rod on your belly then grip foregrip in one hand and blank in the other then twist some how it worked never had a problem after that. Not sure about the two piece worth a try .

bag of ice on it for about 10 minutes. if you have to use heat, ice the smaller part and heat the outer part. That should slightly shrink the inner shaft and heat will expand the outer shaft.

If it's an old Compre it may be a butt over tip ferrule, in which case banging it on the floor is just locking it tighter.
I've had the best luck sticking it in a walk in freezer overnight. Not a big fan of heat.
If the freezer doesn't work then cut it in half and send it to Shimano, or rewrap the guides so they are aligned.

It's from the first year they made the two piece, so either last year or two years ago. I'll try the ice/heat trick. After that I'm snapping it and utilizing the warranty!

I had the same issue with a 2 piece Compre rod that took down to Key West to fish from shore. For the life of me I could not separate the two pieces and was forced to give it away to a guy on the street. I tried everything and knew I wouldn't be able to fly home with it.

Double check if its 2 piece or telescoping butt section.... I have two compres- one is from like 3 years ago and is two piece (attaches just above fore grip) and the one I just picked up is telescoping butt section... I think they just changed this year... Sounds like the problem is that the telescoping section is stuck partway down..? if thats the case i'd just utilize their warranty. with some stores at least you can do over the counter returns which is slick
