Why is it named that?
How’s the fishing there?

Thanks, I'm looking forward to learning the area.
Does anybody know any good fishermen in the area I could bum around with?

don't know why its called Monument Bay but the folks at MB resort are nice folks and their two guides can put you on fish if you choose to hire them.

The name Monument Bay comes from a number of very old "Monuments" (really piles of rocks) that are found here and there along the shoreline in the bay. These where put up by the old French Explorers in the late 1700, and I suppose they where used for something (maybe navagation, but it was even before my time). The largest of the Monuments in Monument bay is located on a small reef on the West end of the bay. Probably 6-7 feet high with an old post stuck in the middle of it sort of like a flag pole.

The fishing is very good through out the area.

It is a wonderful base camp to fish from. The owners are very nice. The harbor is well protected from storms. Make sure you buy the provincial maps from Canada, they are far more detailed than those available domestically.
Make sure you have at minimum a very GOOD compass with your charts(a nitrogen filled U.S. Ranger type, not the cheap "get me to my deer stand one". We got caught in some weather that taught us the value of a good compass.). Even better would be the addition of a very Good GPS that you know how to use.
Buy charts for the adjoining areas to where you want to fish. You never know where you might end up. And also, get the largest waterproof map cases that you can find and afford. More than once wind or boat speed put the charts over the side, which could have been a disaster. Milwaukee Map has waterproof cases which are 24" X 36" the last time I checked.
Saving $25, $50, or even a $100 on equipment that doesn't work when you need it , is not any savings!!!!!!!

Arrange for guides if you will use them, well before you go. At least one good day will start you off on the right foot!
