I am a classic jerkbait style kind of guy. I have a variety of rods (6-3, 7-2, 7-6, 7-9, and 8fters), but I have been using a 6-3 Fenwick HMG-AV for years, and this has to be my favorite rod. I know it is short, but my hookups and fish in the boat ratio is better than any other rod I have.

Since I just snapped off tip of my 6-3, I am really reluctant to run an new style 7-6H jerk bait rod, and leaning towards the 6-9 St.croix Lengent tourney classic jerk.

Any thoughts.

still using the older premier 6-9 for all my jerks. LOVE THEM! if i was going to buy a new one i might consider the 'mojo musky' 7-2 hvy instead of coughing up the $ for the legend 6-9. JMO.

FWIW, I use a 6-4 and a 6-9. I would go with what has worked for YOU and are comfortable with.
If you could borrow someone's long rod to demo, it may help you make a better informed decision.
I've tried longer and did not feel comfortable changing my technique, which is required if you jump up to 7-6 or longer.
Good luck!

I use 6'6" and 6'9" for jerkbaits also when fishing small rivers and creeks from a canoe.

I use an old G Loomis 5'9" Jerkbait rod. Also like a 7' rod for trolling as my boat is low on the water. If I use a longer rod it`s hard to run the tips under the surface on the proper angle. The longer rods either slap on the surface or too much rod is in the water causing undue stress and overloading the rod.

When i broke my rod I clipped my suick onto a 7-2 rod and even it didnt feel comfortable. I have a Lund Predator 2010 do its not super deep but it is a fair distance off the water. I may just check out that 6-9 premeir.

I have a 7-6 mojo muskie, but I am not really a fan. I find the rod really jumpy. When a fish slams it the feedback jump the rod and I often almost loose the rod lol.

I use an older G Loomis 6'10" maroon series rod for all my jerkbait and topwater work. Great rod and I feel I have more control over working the bait with that shorter rod.

I have and use three old 7' G Loomis rods in different situations. I still love those old rods, especially for topwaters and jerkbaits. My old 6'3" rods have been relegated to my young boys abuse and they will get some sturgeon time each spring.

I use the 6'9" Premier, heavy and love it. It's been my jerk bait rod for about 8 years. I would venture a guess it's the rod I use the most throughout the season. I built a 7'6" heavy on a premier blank and just can't get used to the added length and thicker handle for jerk baits.

I'm also still using my older 6'6" St. Croix Avid medium heavy. That one used to be my "go to"...but longer rods came around and it just doesn't get the play it used to.

I also have my first rod, 7ft. Quantum and 7ft. Gander rod that I use regularly.

So, yes the 7ft. and under still get used in my little boat.

Good luck in your search. New stuff is fun! :o)

I have an old Shimano 7 footer that i use exclusively for WTD Topwaters. I would replace it with a 7'6 or 8 footer if it ever meets its demise... I have an 8 Foot Custom Loomis Steel that works awesome but I ususally have a Phantom or Warlock permantly attached to it so for ease of operation I use the Shimano...

I also use my 6'09" Premier for jerkbaits, love it. I might cause some controversy here, but for me, I like a shorter rod when the situation calls for more accurate casts. Example would be casting into weed pockets where placing a lure is critical. Kdawg.

I still use a 6'3" for most gliders and for WTD topwaters, but I use a 7' for Jerkbaits like Suicks and Bobbies. For most of my other baits I'm typically using 8.5' to 9' rods. I really like my TI 9' XH Telescopic for big blades and Magnum Bulldawgs. I also still have a couple of MH 7.5" Gander Mtn Rods that I use for small twitchbaits and light bucktails like Musky Killers, but I find I use them less and less as time goes by.

I haven't had my 6'9" Fenwick out in a while but was thinking it may make an appearance this weekend. I wouldn't mind extending the handle about 5", my TI has spoiled me in that department.
