I'm headed to Cancun in October, has anyone taken fishing equipment and is it worth the expected hassle?

The key for me is getting to the airport with enough time to spare to establish rapport with the inspectors. You simply have to get them to allow you to be a "helper" with getting rods out of/back into the case. If the process is rushed, they get peeed and tell you to move along, heaven help you in not getting a broken rod or even all rods broken. If the airport has a special room and crew for handling oversize stuff, your job is pretty much a sure thing--they know what's going on.
Fishing logos on clothes and all over the cases help to get one that's an angler to notice you and become your instant buddy.

I go to Mexico or Central America every year, I always take tackle with me no issues - the best thing to do is get a good 3 piece travel rods, they fit right in a large checked bag. I've have good luck with these: Tsunami TSCS-703H Travel - Land fish up to 200lbs.

Edit: Remember no hooks, lures or flies in a carry on bag - I had a bad experience with that after my checked bag was already on the plane in Coasta Rica!

No problems at all. We go to Mexico or the Caribbean every year and bring rods along with no problem. We normally carry them on so they won't get broken. All reels and tackle is packed in suitcases. we normally just cast off the beach and catch some cool fish.

FLIES are exempt from being checked. Its in TSA's special items on their website. i usually print out this page and carry it with me, though ive never had to direct anyones attention to it. Ive carried hundreds of flies in my carry on, along with 4 fly rods and 3 reels on multiple visits to central america. The only place i was every hastled was in jamaica. getting a flight from jamaica (my sisters wedding) to belize, where i was heading to fish. They dont get many fishermen coming to and from there compared to other countries so they were very suspicious of all of my things. I made a funny, small joke to one lady and she asked me how funny it would be if i tried fishing in belize when she kept all of my gear. dont make jokes.

I don't agree with pikepatrol...TSA doesn't govern other countries and what your allowed to bring back aboard your carry-ons when in a different country, check your flies on your way out of Mexico or they will likely get taken from you! I've had it happen twice. Once in Mexico (no big deal) it was $20 buck worth of stuff.... once in Costa Rica - big deal probably $300-$500 worth of flies... Perhaps things have been relaxed some now? But I've learned my lesson no hooks of any kind on carry ons for me.

Edit... and for me a fly is generally a 1/0 to 7/0 hook so they thought they looked dangerous

I will be taking muskie lures so I don't think I'll chance taking them and not being able to bring them back. Maybe just get a guide while I'm there and not chance losing my own stuff.

i could be wrong, but the way i see this issue is that the country of Mexico, or coasta rica, is not anti-flying with fish hooks. They dont write the safety handbook for flying. They can regulate stuff like fruits/veggies/possible contaminates all that good stuff. TSA is responsible for safety items such as guns, knives, including fish hooks. unless the gun/knife/fishhook is illegal in the country, it is not illegal to fly with it. Even in other countries our airlines are still operating under TSA guidelines to fly back into the united states. There is some caution and risk still as on the TSA website it does state that if certain airlines do have rules against flying with items such as fishhooks with a zero tolerance policy they are allowed to do so and can take your items. This of course is assuming everybody plays by the books which they do not. Our guide in belize told us his US friends cant even send him flies because they "go missing" even through the mail. Hes had friends try to send flies in the pages of books as well but nothing ever makes it to him, they all get jacked by workers in the mail business, airlines, etc. and sold or given to their family/friends that fish because quality stuff is very hard to come by and expensive if you can get it. Maybe this is what could have happened to you justin??

It sounds like fly fishing is rather popular in other countries, I wouldn't have guessed that.

not at all the lady didn't even know what they were - other than they were sharp...they didn't take them I just couldn't get on the plane...I gave them to a local. TSA even says large hooks are not allowed on carry on. I don't fish for bonefish or permit

Nor do i......did you know theres been more tarpon over 150lb landed on a 1/0 owner aki than any other hook? Its the "go to" for nearly every toad pattern tied. also the 1/0 teimco 600 sp is has a great hookup to landing ratio. although we did get into some permit while tarpon fishing and it put a smile on my face....i shall target them one day.....it does suck they hook your stuff that stuff isnt cheap and if youre tying your own they robbed you of hours and hours of work.

I'll be curious to hear your results. I visit the area 1-2 times a year and have considered bringing some of my gear as well. Not sure I'd know what to do with some things you might catch, though!

Do you need a fishing license down there?

not needed from shore, if you hire a boat they are needed, most times the license come with the negotiated boat price but make sure you ask.

I know when we have hired a boat they say the license is included, yet they have never asked us for our names or anything, at least in Mexico. Makes you wonder if there really is a license "purchased".

As far as shore fishing, we even caught a red snapper from shore. One of the guys that works at the hotel was bummed to hear we released it. He said he would've wanted to eat it!

I go to Cabo every fall and one year I had some expensive plugs in my carry on. They wouldn't let me through security. Luckily I had time to go back and check my carry on but I had no way of securing the bag and I was lucky nobody took my stuff. Don't risk putting hooks in your carry on. I always keep my expensive reels with me though which you are allowed to do. As others have said, I always keep the printed out TSA rules with me.... I've actually had to educate TSA workers on their own rules more than once.
