Location: Around | I had a fish recently break off boat side above the leader when it jumped about 3 foot out of the water. I am assuming the mainline must have hit part of the fish when it was doing its aerial show. The fish did not appear to be hooked very good and the lure was outside his mouth so I am hoping he has shook the lure.
Because of this I am now questioning my setup. I currently fish 65 pound PP with 100# stealth fluro leaders. I primarily jig with this setup. I know this is considered "light" tackle for jigging but it has never given me an issue.
What I am debating on changing now is the leader length and also thinking of going single strand steel for the jigging application.
Has anyone else ever had this happen?
What length leader do you typically use for a jigging application? |

Location: Detroit River | For jigging Bondy baits I make my own 7-strand (125 Lb) leaders & they're usually around 12 to 15 inches.

Location: Mt. Zion, IL | Get rid of the power pro for sufix 80 lb and never look back. Power pro sounds like a hacksaw through the guides by comparison... 80 lb test and a 180 lb leader and I have not lost a musky lure in 4 years. |

Location: Around | Vertical jigging. Had suffix and both spools bleached white in a month.
I guess my question is do most people vertical jigging use a longer leader? It had nothing to do with the mainline. Sharp parts of the fish are gonna cut it regardless of what brand. I have used pp for 10 years for numerous species and never any issues. |

| I use 80lb Sufix Performance Braid or Tuff Line XP with stock 150lb x 14" fluorocarbon leaders from Stealth Tackle. So far so good. |

| S@&$ happens for sure in musky fishing! I always check my line about ten feet or so above my leader for any areas of concern. I re-tie immediately after finding any issues. Anything seems to be able to jack your line up these days. |

| IMHO when using a small slow moving jigging lures that a Muskie might be more likely to inhale and get all the way into it's mouth, then I prefer to use a seven strand wire leader. When using larger lures that a Muskie would be less prone to swallow, then I think Fluorocarbon is fine. |

Location: NE Ohio | power pro is a good line, there are better to be bought. but none of them take side abraision very well at all. test it for yourself. just hold it tight at both ends, then have someone open a pair of sharp scissors and just push against the line from the side in the open sharp v area. cuts like butter with a hot knife. TUFF line is probably the most abrasion resistant i have seen. sounds like you just had a little bad luck with that fish, line in the wrong place at the wrong time. JMO. good luck out there. |
