| Dad bought his boat new in the mid 90's.. Every year we talk about putting a radio in it and every year we winterize it without a radio. I'd like to 'borrow' his boat one day and return with a radio installed. I am not too concerned with doing it as I've done more complex systems in vehicles in the past and am not new to 12 volt wiring.... But, I don't have the slightest clue what is out there... Are the 150-200 dollar combos with two speakers and a headunit a decent quality, or would we be dissapointed? Not looking to rattle the windshield and let everyone on the lake know what we are listening to BUT also don't want a radio that sounds like garbage.. The radio just needs to have AM and FM. We do not use CD's or Bluetooth, so those options are not important (though would imagine most decent quality stuff already has both and more anyways). What is a good compromise and price point to get into 'good' quality.. Any specific suggestions? Would prefer black as most all the other electronics, switches, etc are black and there is basically no white in the boat. Thanks.

| I've got a Sony Marine head unit in my muskie rig and I've been very pleased with it. It's plenty loud for being on the water. I've got two 8" speakers and four 4" speakers hooked to it, no amplifier. I've got about $250 in the whole setup. My suggestion is make sure you get a weather resistant enclosure with a closeable lid/face plate in case it's raining. You can pick one up for around $20. Also, get the best speakers you can afford. I've found that the cones in the speakers included with a head unit set dry rot within a year or so if they're expose to a lot of sun light/ uv rays. Also, when wiring the power source, run a set of leads directly to a battery with a dedicated shut off toggle switch. I've had several boats that if the radio was wired into other things, when you turn things on such as aerators, bilge pumps, or go to start your engine there is a momentary voltage drop in the power supply line which will cause the radio to shut down momentarily. |

| I bought some rockford fosgate speakers off of amazon for a little over 100$ and a radio with 2 speakers and the rain protector face plate for 100$ that i bought from cabelas. Installed the radio and rain protector and the fosgate speakers and sold the 2 speakers that came with the radio for 25$. So i spent around 200$ for the set up. Highly recommend the rockford speakers, sound great. The tweeters are seperate from the speakers, gives you a better quality sound. Highly agree on spending a little more on the speakers than the radio, but would make sure to have the rain protector face plate. Hope this helps alittle.
