Location: Beaver County, Pennsylvania | do you guys mix up your retrieves with a lot of pauses, speed ups, slow downs or do you run it steady? i am just asking out of curiosity.
my personal experience has demonstrated that they like a speed up from time to time and then slow it down retrieve. |

| The topwater strikes I have had, have all been misses, so I am not the best to answer this. That being said, we all know erratic action produces the strikes. The problem as I have found however is they tend to miss. I have had several muskies jump clean over the bait, most occurring on my change in speed. I think its a double edged sword. I think you need to depend on the prop style baits to 'be the erratic action' and keep a steady retrieve. That can be fast, or slow. I may be wrong on that, but my experience albeit limited with topwater suggests that. |

Location: Minnesota: where it's tough to be a sportsfan! | Both types of retrieves should be tried. Because you are not specific on the bait you are using makes it hard to answer. There are activity windows when a steady retrieve, (designed to look like it's getting away) is needed to trigger. Other times, some variations tend to help draw their interest. |

Location: MN | Slow and steady. Most people pull topwater too fast IMO. At least too fast for the waters I fish. If you have one following it away from the boat speed it up a bit or turn your rod to the side to get it to change direction. |

River = faster
Of our 15 muskies in 4 days a couple weeks ago 7 were topwater fish. Slow and steady was the key. But I do fish a lot of rivers that move pretty quick and I like a faster retrieve in the current idk y but it seems to produce. Although the faster I reel the less fish I usually actually get hooks into. |
