I just bought two new rods from Abu Garica
8' 6" 50-100LB extra heavy fast Lures: 6-16 11+Tip
And Now Im looking for a reel.
Anybody ever use DIAWA SALTIST LEVERWIND for musky?
http://daiwa.com/reel/detail.aspx?id=442
Here are the LEVELWIND reels I have been looking at:
SHIMANO Calcutta B (700B)
PENN Fathom FTH60LW
DAIWA Saltist STTLW50HA
I took extensive notes on these and others.
The PENN isn't that fast at 4.3 , So that leaves the other two....
The DIAWA Saltist is 6.4 , While the SHIMANO Calcutta is a mere 4.7
http://fish.shimano.com/publish/content/global_fish/en/us/index/pro...

The other thing is LINE CAPACITY (in braid only):
SALTIST: is 50/630 and my calculated estimation for 80LB is 80/530
CALCUTTA: is 50/620 and 80/330
Bearings: Calcutta 3 Saltist 4

So now that you have all the facts, Here is my reasoning:
I would like to get an all around reel, that can be used for bass and trout while I'm not going after musky.
Musky is my goal, But I'd like to use the same reel so I don't have a collection of reels, JUST YET (Pending wife's approval in the future).
I ALSO want to BE ABLE to do saltwater fishing from time to time on trips.
I also figure that if a machine is designed for the harsh abuse of saltwater spray, then it will last longer while being used in a lake or river.
The higher capacity is important to me, as well as the number of bearings used. -The SALTIST uses corrosion resistant bearings.

To some, this may seem like too much for musky, But I stepped DOWN to the saltiest....From originally looking at the SALTIGA HYPER SPEED which has 7.1:1!
WITH six bearings!
But it is also NOT a level wind, which means a lot more learning on how to properly reel the line back in. ... for right now, too much hassle. I want to FISH, not PRACTICE.

Now you know what I have in mind, and the facts. So please give me any advice.
Has anyone used DAIWA SALTIST for musky?

For an all purpose reel, I think those reels are too big (really big for bass). The size 20 Saltist would be better IMO. Have you looked at the Abu NaCl.

part of my thinking is, with a bigger reel, the spool has a larger circumference , which moves faster on the feed/surface when reeling after a catch. Kind of like an extra gear to speed it up.

Get a shimano curado 300ej and that will suffice for both bass and muskie....sort of.

I would suggest using the search engine on this site and play around with typing in the reels your looking at, or just the terms reel advice, reel suggestions, which reel etc. there's plenty of helpful information on this forum from past theads that are not hard to look up. I do this all the time when i'm looking for answers and have found it very helpful.

This is true. However, IMO you will not be happy with these reels especially for bass. As previously mentioned, do a search on here for reels. For a bass/musky combo, I'd be looking for a reel sized like Abu 5000s/50s or Shimano 300s. The curado 300EJ or NaCl 50 will give you some speed, handle a variety of musky baits and would be okay for bass.

Gear ratio isn't everything, it's only part of the equation. Both an Abu Toro Winch and a Shimano Tranx have a 4.6:1 gear ratio, but the Winch only brings in 22 inches per turn (IPT) whereas the Tranx has an IPT of 30. I wouldn't use the same reel for bass as I would Musky, but if I had to, I would be looking at either a Abu NACL, Diawa 300, or Shimano Curado 300 ej. I wouldn't even think about taking the same reel that I bass fish with to go deep sea fishing, or vice versa. I had the Daiwa Saltist STTLW20H-C Levelwind, which is the new black one, before upgrading to a Tranx, and there's no way I would take that thing bass fishing. You also need to think about how the reel is going to balance on a rod, and I would have a hard time sticking a big musky reel on a bass rod, especially one that weighs, 19 ounces.

I had a Saltist for three seasons and It just never felt right. It was just too big. Have you considered a Revo Toro NACL50? That would serve all your purposes well.

First, Thank you , all of you, for taking your individual time to "tackle" my questions.

I have looked hard at two sites, OF:

Abu Gargia TORO NACL60HS and

SHIMANO CU300EJ

The EJ has a bit more speed @ 32 Inches per crank

TORO is 30.9 -Pretty close unless you're driving a NASCAR and these are in MPH

The TORO advantage is that it COMES WITH 2 handles, so you can switch from one grip to dual.

The only thing that makes a huge difference is the MAX TORQUE:

TORO 22 LBS

CURADO 15 LBS (Abu Garcia TORO wins again)

So the question is, is this strictly bass or can this be used for MUSKY?

The LINE CAPACITY isn't high on either, but cannot compare the two because the two sites show different line weights.

ABU GARCIA     NACL 60HS 30LB 330YD

SHIMANO   CURADO 300 EJ 50LB 205YD (ALL IN BRAIDED)

Would that be enough for musky though?

Both reels hold plenty of 80lb braid to musky fish and are commonly used for musky fishing. Also, consider the size 50 NaCl.

If you decide on the Abu, shop around a bit on the web. They can be had for ~$215. I don't see many deals on the curado. For more thoughts and comparisons on these two, there was a recent thread on here discussing that topic. I've owned both and prefer the curado but a lot of guys prefer the Abu.

Most people I know only put 75-100 yards of braid on their reel, so neither of these reels should have an issue.

My favorite reel I own is revo Toro. and yes for musky! I have used plenty of Curados for musky as well. Both reels will do everything you are going to need them to do and more

I would say 'yes" you could use either the Curado or the Revo for for the applications you asked about. Yes, Both The Curado and Revo will work for muskies. I run Revos and my Uncle runs Curados and we have no complaints about either.
