Location: Elroy, Wisconsin | Went through 100 plus bucktails today on my pond in prep for Canada next week. I passed some that worked great in my opinion and others went into the needs tuning pile. Here's what I looked for:
1. Blades immediately spin on the retrieve, with no jerk required
2. Hair and tinsel pulsates on the retrieve
3. Blades do not quit on the eight
4. blades move plenty of water on the buldge
5. Weighted deep bucktails stay horizontal on the retrieve with no tail down
6. Plenty of flash
Any other comments or ideas, things I missed? About two thirds are making the trip.
Your mileage may vary,

Location: Palatine, IL | A great bucktail catches fish. I spent last week in Vilas throwing all kinds of bucktails. I got 2 follows and 8 largemouth on a lure that is a pain in the butt to work with. You have to jerk it to get the blades spinning, and still works only half the time. The bucktails that cast a mile, spin easy, and never foul didn't get looked at. You never know what they are going to want. Too bad for me they like the lure I don't like to throw. |

Location: oswego, il | Agree on bucktails that catch fish, good pints above but a good bucktail might not always be perfect.
learned something cool about double ten bucktails and are not straight shaft but are split ringed blade section to the skirt section. The "vortex" occasionally sucks the skirt section into the blades stopping them momentarily then it falls back and the blades go again. I catch fish with them. Its a good thing. |

Edit: Never mind, I get it. |

Location: minocqua, wi. | best one has had the shaft all twisted up and bent in half a few times … the harder it is to "straighten" back out the better. they should come pre-broken. |

| I have two bucktails that are special. There could be something unique with the blades, shaft or skirt but I think what really makes them special is between my ears. |
