I have been fishing muskies for the past six or so years and never hooked one super bad ever.... LUCK... except one I hooked in the back that missed a suick.... now that WAS a fight.... however always wondered what would I do if one way hooked bad?!?!? I have the jaw spreaders in easy reach, pliers with hook cutters, etc....

BUT last weekend a northern got hooked pretty tight and we tried the hook cutters on the pliers and quickly realized and have been looking but cannot find a hook cutter that strikes my liking or looks like it would work well....

What do you guys recommend?

Most people use knipex. I have been using harbor freight mini bolt cutters (~$8) and have worked great so far but I only fish about half a dozen times a season. I've cut 4-6 7/0 hooks do far and they seem to be holding up just fine. Eventually I will upgrade to knipex and have these as backups.

Hiya,

No doubt knipex are the way to go. I used to purchase the harbor freight ones, but after a year or so of use, one of the cutting heads would break off..

I'm pretty quick to cut hooks on a fish. If I cannot get it to come out with a couple of yanks (not to the pint if damaging the fish any more than what the hook gas already done) I'll cut the hooks and free them by pulling the barbed end through. I'd much rather put on a new hook rather than risk more damage to the fish.

I've had my knipex for about 6 years now... Lives in the boat, gets rusty, and has yet to fail me. Bought it used off eBay for about $25 or so.

It is definitely worth it to pay a little more... You'll kick yourself when you have a fish hooked up well then go to cut the hook and the cutter breaks. Then you are SOL trying to quickly unhook the fish..

I just bought some knipex and the cut 8/0 hooks easily. They are surprisingly small(but long) too which will make it easier to pole inside a fish mouth. Well worth the dollars.
I attached a float to them.

If you can get the one with the spring that separates the sides in my humble opinion is preferred. Then you are not having to worry about opening the cutters as they are open from the get go... Easier for me to control and maneuver as needed

Ditto! (I donated a set of jaw spreaders to the lake gods last week. I know better, but just wasn't thinking.)

I have used the knipex and still have one. After a few years of use even with adjustment it didn't close all the way. A buddy put me onto a Shimano Heavy duty hook cutter. It is a different design than the Knipex

I have had that one now for XX year and it still is going strong and it cuts my 8/0 just fine. What ever you get, drill a hole in the handle and like has been mentioned put a wrist strap on it. Even a shoe string works.

When I looked I was thinking the spring ones would be the recommended..... just checking.... they are expensive but amazon has them half off and free shipping til the 7th... I would just feel better having a good bolt cutter in the boat! Thanks guys!

Now just hope I don't get a mangled mess of hooks in the mouth before I can get a pair..... been super lucky so far with Muskies.... now pikes they get a little crazy on the strikes and more often get a mouth full lol

Knipex, I believe, has a life time warranty. Did you try to contact the company for exchange?

30" Northerns are real jerks. The only bigger jerks are 22-26" Northerns, as they flop completely upside and look like they are TRYING to get the hooks in your hands.

$52 for the 20 degree angled ones with the spring. I just bought a pair of these on another site last week for $63 and thought that was a decent deal...I figured the angled ones would make it easier to get to hooks in tough spots...we'll see.

I have basically the same thing as knipex but they came from the Snap-On guy. Lifetime warranty, cuts just as good, and were much cheaper. Even with the Snap-On pair you are paying partially for the name. Knipex is the industry standard but compared to other stuff out there that is just as good and in some cases better are they really worth $50-$60 a pop? Good marketing on their part.

I used to run the strap around my wrist until a fish went bonkers in the net, I let the hook cutter go and the fish tangled up in the rope and nearly yanked my hand off. Now they are tied to a boat cleat so if one does go insane I can step away cleanly.

I'll gladly pay that much as it potentially can save me costly trips to the Er to get hooks removed and/or stitched up.

I have used a few cheaper pairs and they just did not cut well. Even the USA made Kleins did not cut hooks well. I bought a pair of Knipex used on Ebay a few years ago for about $22.00 and they work great! Hooks don't have a chance. I keep them in my dry box and there are no signs of rust. But like others said a lanyard would be a good idea so they don't go swimming. I assume Knipex uses a really good heat treatment on the jaws for them to cut so well.

x2....again.

I bought my knipex more so for me than the fish. I can attest to the fact that being attached to a 40 inch musky with plenty of energy, is no pleasure cruise.

caught my first one last weekend and I had to use mine, glad I bought it as it made it a lot easier to release the fish and make sure it survived.

2 weeks ago when I was up north I went out with a couple friends. My buddy forgot his bolt cutters in his house and was having trouble getting a well hooked fish released. So, I handed him my knipex. I am back home in AR and my knipex are now in his boat. Will I get a discount on replacements for promoting them now?
