Has anyone had any success with any of the cheaper go pro style cameras that are out there? Looking to try one out but I'm not ready to drop $400 for a go pro black. Just curious if the cheaper ones are a waste of money. Seems like every model that I've looked at has had at least a few good reviews and a few bad reviews.

Contour Roam is just fine, been using it for 3 seasons. 4 16GB cards, and a portable charger...and you can film all day in 1080P with little to no fish bubble eye.

I picked up a XCel cam this winter and so far it's worked good.

I didn't want to spend the $400 for a first camera and these where about $250 @ Cabelas. I seen them a little cheeper on Amazon. It came with a few mounts, the under water case and a remote on/off.
I picked up a couple extra battery's and a remote charger. With a 16GB SD card and the 3 battery's I can film for about 7-1/2 hours. So far so good!

Don't be afraid of the GoPro White Edition. For the price it is perfect for sharing video with family and friends. Here is a video I took with the white edition with a hat mount I made:

I just bought the Black 3+ edition. I haven't had a chance to fish with it yet, but I did use it to film a black bear hunt in Manitoba last month:

I have really grown to love capturing video of outdoor activities over the past year!

Can't go wrong with silver white or black gopros. The newer ones have a better quality video but just get what you can afford and you'll be happy when you can go back and watch that fish you caught.

I have a white edition and it has worked well for me as far as video quality goes. Battery life leaves a little to be desired though.

While the battery life isn't the best, I still found I was able to get an hour and a half to two hours on a set. I then bought two sets of the Wasabi batteries from Amazon. Two batteries and a charger for about $20-$30. The Camera beeps when the batteries die, and with the looping feature it is really easy to capture the video you want to avoid a ton of time editing.

Microsoft Movie Maker and a GoPro with a halfways decent laptop can make some pretty cool videos.

I'm still using an original GoPro HD Hero (so technically the "1") and haven't had any issues with it. the newer ones do have higher resolutions but filming at 720p60fps (or you could to 1080p30fps) is still HD quality and has proven to be just fine. It's recorded many catches for me and I don't intend to upgrade until this one kicks the bucket. If i want a photo i'll grab one off the video, or switch to photoburst mode before taking the fish out of the net.

Check craigslist/ebay, shouldn't have a hard time finding a GoPro HD 1/2/early-model 3 for much less than $400. All you need is the camera, a floaty, and a few extra batteries.

Contour Roam 2 is only $169 or less right now, you can find used 2's or 1600 for under $100. The rotating lens makes mounting options limitless. No need for a case since they're waterproof and the video is very good at 720. If you can find one of the contour DC chargers it will allow unlimited runtime, as long as it's not raining because the door has to be open. This is all shot with old 1600 Contour's:

I have a hero 2, a hero 3, and a hero black and by far the one that has caused the least problems with video quality, battery life, and overall performance is just the hero 2. They all are awesome cameras though
