Are there any upgrades I can make to a 400d that will make it compare to a TE ? Can you get a power handle anywhere for the d ? It's a decent reel just not a TE .

I can do a 5 bearing upgrade on the D, 4 bearings in the handle paddles and 1 on the spool $35.00 and upgrade drag to Carbontex $14.00
I would not install a power handle on this reel, stock double handle is 102mm long, the TE was only 95mm.

Just dont understand why you would have to upgrade a $400 reel. At that price it should be the best.

The operative word being "should". How many people put aftermarket upgrades on their trucks ? One would think that at $40K+ the vehicle should be the best and not require anything.

You don't "have" to upgrade the reel but experience has shown me that it was worth the extra investment. Pikemaster upgraded my TEs and they are better than factory new.

I may be crazy Sled, but I'm not stupid !

Ever consider a Conquest ? If/when I need another, that's probably what I'll do...

I had pikemaster do my TE's and my D series. Both turned out great. The spool bearings on the TE's and the five bearing on the 400d. The factory 400d was good but the 5 bearing is a big improvement. It's worth the money.

Improved casting. And smoother retrieve, and a more solid feel the handle had some play in it. The bearings got rid of the play in the rubber grip part of the handle.

I have one of Dave’s power handles and I love it. I am sure there is some mechanical reasoning that Pike Master understands that I don’t that you should not do it but I have been using for 8 weeks heavily with no issue. I also have one with the standard handle. Both awesome reels. It is stupid you have to "upgrade" a 400 dollar reel but the reality is these were not made for musky fishing in mind they were made for salt water application that don’t require casting the baits we do etc. so at some point it becomes necessary.

I am not sure how necessary it is to upgrade "out of the box" but as you maintain the reel over time its a smart play. I look at it like buying a bucktail; Once I cut the hooks on a DCG or a Dadson bait I put an 8/0 hook on it because I prefer an 8/0 to the 6/0 on a Dadson or the 7/0 on a DCG. My preference is not enough to "monkey with it" right away (unlike Bulldawgs & there inferior hardward) but once used I get it done inthe manner that I feel is "the best way"
