I have a 2004 Johnson 175, and it has a weird problem. I take it out on the lake and start it, it runs fine to my first fishing spot, then i fish for an hour then i go to move to my next spot, it runs fine again. Then I fish my hour and go to my next spot and I start the motor it idles fine in neutral then I put it in gear and it sputters and kills, then I go to step on the gas and it sputters and kills, but i can redline it in neutral. It does this like 5-10 times before it runs fine again but when i'm running WOT after this happens it nearly doesn't have as much power as when it did earlier in the trip. I took it to the mechanic and we got screwed pretty bad and he didn't fix anything. Hopefully you guys can give me some things to check or approach the mechanic with... Thanks Cranker

I had a 2000 Johnson 115 that did similar things. It took a while to figure out the cause, but mine was caused by the power pack. They said that is a common problem with the Johnson motors. Not sure if the larger Johnson motors have the same problems, but you might want to get it checked.

had a similar issue with a 99 175 mercury- turned out to be a bad coil on 1 of the cylinders - it was shutting down the whole side of the motor and going into safety mode so it wouldnt go over 2000rpm-in gear only did it once in a while too usually when it got hot

Replaced the power pack and it still does the same exact thing.

sounds alot like fuel delivery issue.hose filters or vor pump.having weak fuel psi or low volume can rev up in neutral but under load give you issues.
