Location: Madison, WI | Hi guys,
Heading up to Canada in 3 weeks and I have a few questions about what is and isn't allowed into Canada:
1. Can we take red potatoes in with us? This answer has changed a few times if I recall correctly. But I think we can take potatoes in, IIRC. Correct?
2. Can we take fresh fruit in with us to Canada? If I remember correctly, we can't take it from Canada back into U.S. But I have no idea if I can take from U.S. into Canada.
Any help on these questions from somebody in the know would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Location: Minnesota | Last summer I asked and was told that potatoes are allowed as long as they are inspected and commercially bagged as #1. I have never been hassled for bringing fruit into Canada but you can't bring it back to the US if you don't eat it all. The potatoes used to be denied due to the blight outbreak I think (although it could have been other diseases related to seed potatoes).
The US doesn't allow fruits back into the US because Canada has different import regulations regarding their fruit than the US. Apparently the 2 countries Food and Drug Agencies don't agree on what is safe to eat. Funny that you can't bring Florida oranges back into the US. |

| They wouldn't allow us to bring in any potatoes so we stopped and just buy them in canada.. Same thing was said to us about the diseases certain vegetables can bring into the country.. |

| not sure where you are entering but International Falls crossing has a Wal Mart on the Canadian side. Much easier to buy it once you are into Canada. |

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Jackpot, It all depends on the moment - the only time I've ever been pulled over for inspection was when I declared I had potatoes.... pretty funny when I showed them the Produce of Canada tag on the bag... You are required to declare all produce, ,failure to do so could be painful inspection and fine $ . Its much simpler to get them on the Canadian side....
Good advice from Whitetailchaser1 - Google -> Ft. Frances Walmart...
There's also a grocery store in Nestor Falls, the locals have to eat too....LOL
Have fun!

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Spuds are OK when in commercially packaged. IE, don't dig from your garden and out them in a bag. It is the dirt they don't want coming across. Just like with worms. You can bring potatoes, just brig a full bag you bought ...not a partial one or some thrown from another bag into a paper bag, etc.
I've never had a problem with fruit bought on the USA side of the border going in to Canada. The US Ag people are anal about stuff coming back. Stuff grown in the USA is not welcome in the USA if it has made a trip to Canada during it's lifetime. |
