| what is the best all around bug repellent. Not just mosquitoes. Whether its a spray or some other device, what is the best. |

Location: Watersmeet, Michigan | Still can't beat good old Off. Mosquitoes, black flies, ticks, does a pretty good job on them all. I prefer the "smooth and dry" spray.

Location: MN | Deet is best for mosquitoes. Permethrin for ticks. For black flies and other biting flies Deet doesn't work as well. That's why Off, Cutters and the like don't cut it when the black flies, no seeums, etc are bad. If you can still find it there was a product called No Stinkin' Bugs that had Deet plus two additional repellents for biting flies. I think Sawyer might make a similar product. And don't let the amount of Deet throw you. It's not available in different strengths - Deet is Deet. 100% does not repel them more or better than 40% or 25%, it just lasts a little longer before you need to reapply it. 25% is 4-6 hours, higher is 6-8 hours, 100 is 8-10. |

| I don't know about everyone else---- but where we fish in NW Ontario----the skeeters don't care how much repellant you BATHE yourself in------they just keep coming. They aren't bad during the daylight hours, but come the "lowlight" periods---they come out in SWARMS. The ONLY defense we've found involves TOTAL coverage in these "lowlight" time frames. We use lightweight raingear coupled with surgical gloves for our hands and mosquito head nets from WalMart to keep those buzzing little buggers out of our eyes, nose, and ears. This mosquito "suit of armor" has proven COMPLETELY effective. On our trip last year-- the skeeters were HORRIBLE--- I went a FULL FIVE DAYS before my first mosquito bite----now THAT'S AWESOME for NW Ontario. Cover up and you'll be just fine. Good Luck---SN |

Location: plant earth | Bounty dryer sheets. Stick a couple in the boat and on your shirt. Works good around here. Especially those biting flies. |

Location: minocqua, wi. | the hatch this year will laugh off anything you try to use … the only deterrent is to hope that a horsefly lands on both shoes and on the bill of your hat and stays there. |

Has any one used a thermacell? I have multiple thermacells and I really like them. I think they work well provided there isnt much wind. They take a bit to begin getting effective, but give them 10 minutes and you hardly notice any mosquitos.
I have used them with marginal effectiveness for lake flies as well, but that is hard because there is always air moving around, but it did seem to bring some relief. |

Yup, I was thinking the same thing when I saw this thread. I've never seen it like this before. Need bug spray to go out in my yard, in full sun, and spray with DEET only lasts about 30 minutes.
I think when it gets bad-really bad the way to go is full coverage like stated above. Long sleeves and a bug head net, or full suit. |

Location: MN | Agreed, and if soaking in DEET doesn't cut it, Thermacell is a joke. Thermacell barely works when they're merely annoying.

| Those who haven't ventured North yet this year are probably unaware of the swarms that can often be quite surprising to encounter. Just not sure if this is due to global warming or Obamacare?? |

get it at bass pro in the cover scent area.
I have been using it for years and nothing bothers me from the north-woods to down south.

it's an end to what was about an 8-9 year drought … two years of normal snowfall and 110" this past year along with reasonable rains the past two years. you'll notice lake levels especially on seepage lakes many of which almost disappeared during the drought. some still haven't come back to what would be considered "normal".
Yes, there's a little more water under my dock this year but I had to kill 100's of bloodthirsty insects while installing it.
Then, millions of their friends avenged them! |

| Sled is right. This year is one for the record books on the hatch of mosquitoes. Daylight (10:00am-4:00pm) is tolerable if in the sun. Had to pick up a few head nets and surgical gloves from Wally World on Sat. for evening fishing. Felt like a pin cushion. And the first Mayfly on the kitchen window Sunday. |

Location: WI | I typically put my gortex on at dusk. Unless it's really hot out. I have also found that my sun scarf doubles as a great barrier for bugs. I pull it up over my ears and nose. Bugs still swarm but you can tell there there. I also like me some serious deep woods off with max deet! |

| It helps if your fishing partner is fatter and sweatier that you are. After dark that no longer helps your both toast. Black flies eat deet. |

Location: Ames, Iowa | I lightly spray an equine insect repellant on my boat carpet called Bronco. After it dries it keeps the biting flies out of the boat. They are the worst. The only thing I found that works on biting flies on skin is WD 40. Looks like I have to check out No Stinking Bugs. |
