Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | We have our latest possible this year based on the calendar falling to June 1 on a Sunday. As we anxiously await June 21, we will be watching conditions and getting irritated watching and hearing people talk about northern fishing double 10 bucktails and big jerk baits. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! Oh to be a deputy CO in my non-existent spare time.
Lake conditions will make for an interesting opener. The late spring and cold water to start would have indicated slow weed growth would be expected. Combine that now with rapidly rising water (over 2 feet since ice out) and weeds may be really behind schedule. This is where the later opening will help, giving a week for things to try and catch up some.
Water temps rose rapidly from low 50s before Memorial Weekend to over 70 during the heat wave last week (May 26-29.) There have been some fish spotted paired up making babies so this is a good sign that perhaps it has started and may get to finish before the opener in just over two weeks.
Several muskies were landed on walleye gear during walleye opening week but that since calmed down during week two of walleye fishing. There was one more caught a couple of days ago, but otherwise haven't heard too many being landed and handled.
Hoping for good stable conditions to allow the spawning to get finished and then maybe allow for a few early season biggies to get caught right out of the gate.
Good luck to everyone on the water for the MN opener this weekend.
Please leave the muskie baits at home until June 21 if you are coming north!

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Water temps have settled in to the low to mid 60s. Stable weather in general the past 10-11 days. Some rain but no t-storms. YET. Water still rising fast at a rate of about 4 inches per week. This will further "slow down" the weed growth. Walleyes, northern and bass are all snapping. Some walleye fishing being done on humps, but mostly shorelines/points. |

Location: Warroad, Mn | Simular at the Angle. Surface water in the low 60's, but warmer when it's calm and sunny. Bass are starting to move up. Lots of small muskies shallow (and a few nice ones). Muskies are spawning, with several fish spoted that are beat-up, but others that are still very clean. With the late opener I would guess most muskies will be done with the spawn.
Very high water which make for lots of floating stuff. Keep your eyes peeled, I've hit a couple of floaters already. So far I've been lucky.

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Thanks for the update, Doug.
Important comment about floaters because there will be lots of debris for most of the summer with all the rain in the district resulting in gates open in Fort Frances pushing heavy current into the lake at Baudette.
My fishing at night after work may be a little sketchy this year.
Keep us posted.

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Got out opening weekend on Sunday and fished 3 til about 8pm. Fish were around, but things seemed more like summer patterns with the absence of fishable weeds. Some bays that warmed up in the two days of sunshine that have traditionally held fish still did so. Found a couple on the first spot, another reliable island with a long point on one end and small point on the other. There was a fish on both points. Saw a another fish in a bay and one other fish in the weeds for a total of 7 total. One other strike, the biggest of the day that did not hook up on a low hooking percentage bait that always seems to get their attention but cant get them pinned.
Small cranks (x-rap) caught the little nugget, 3 nice bass and a small pike. The other strike came on the aforementioned small twitch bait. One follow on a bucktail. Fish that followed were generally low and slow.
Water temps ranged from 66 to 74 in a couple south facing bays that used to have a sand beach but are flooded out.
Lots of debris and water on the dirty side, but clarity a bit better than I expected.
Others have been seeing fish..some on bucktails, but mostly on small cranks. Nothing big landed yet, except a 45 that ate a walleye anglers 12-14 incher on the way up and didn't let go. Another boat casting hooked a small pike and the biggest muskie he has seen up here came and took a look at the northern for a snack, but passed it up.
Cold front trolled through today with NE winds at 15-20..winds letting up tomorrow and temps back near 70 the next couple days. Stable weather leading to the weekend and new moon period could make it fun.

| Fished Saturday and saw water temperatures around 63-70 . Moved most of out fish in the weeds, managed to raise 17 on Saturday but most came in low and slow and didn't want to cooperate . We put a 41" in the bag around noon that absolutely smoked a yellow and green showgirl away from the boat, 2 casts later and we got a small 28". Throw in a 35" and 37" pike and it was a good start to the season . We returned Sunday and had completely different results,..water temps raised and fish weren't in the weeds any longer. We saw 5 fish all day and put a 43" in the boat around 6pm, fish seemed to be relating to rocks with some weed cover near by. Once again the fish ate the yellow and green showgirl. Finished the day with a 38" pike. All in all a good first weekend! |

Location: Lake of the Woods, Morson, Ontario | Big fish were active last week!!
One group, 5 guys, 2 boats. Fishing from noonish on June 24 through part of June 28.
45, 49.5, 50, 50.25. 51.25, 52.5.
Bucktail for the biggest and one other 50 caught on a spinner bait. Rest on rubber.
A couple out of the weeds, but the rest rock points.
Winds have been ferocious for a couple of days and will be strong most of the week.
Water levels still rising. Debris still a serious concern.
Be smart out there. They are just fish. Getting home safe to your families and friends is more important than trying to get that one big fish to eat 20 mins after sunset 7 miles from base camp. |

| I was out on Saturday with two buddies and there was some serious debris near the Angle. Please be safe. Cant get out today due to the high winds and will try again tomorrow.
We got four fish and saw 15 and some pretty nice ones.
