Hey guys, the wife is looking at getting a new vehicle. We are primarily looking at Ford Edges and the Chevy Equinox. It would be nice if it could also pull my boat (Tuffy Esox). Seems like you get a little more SUV for the money with the Equinox, but i wasn't sure how it was for towing. It has the V6 4L and the smaller 2.4L. The V6 is rated up to 3500lb towing and is rated to 1500lbs.DO you guys think the smaller 2.4L would be way to small to pull the Tuffy Esox?

Thanks

The 2.4 would be too small in my opinion. However I would be more worried about the transmission holding up to towing if I were going a long distance.

That smaller motor is ok for a jon boat. Anything bigger and it struggles. Plus the smaller motors have oil consumption and timing issues without figuring additional wear and tear from towing.

Thats kind of what I was thinking. Plus any towing we would do with it, would be over a long distance (Madison area to Hayward). I would think that the Ford Edge or Equinox with the 3.5L V6 would have enough power to tow it.

the 3.6 is the better motor that will hold up over a longer period of time. The mpg sticker difference pushes a ton of people in to the 2.4 but real world millage won't be much different. The 3.6 is the only v-6 gm makes in a car and crossover so it is in everything from a Camaro to a XTS Caddy. Plus most dealers stock mainly 2.4-s because of the demand for better fuel economy by the consumer, so your dealer might push you onto something on his lot or easy to find (2.4)

How big is your boat?

I tow an 1890 with a 3.7L V6 Jeep with zero issues. Boat, motor, trailer weigh roughly 2100 lbs. I won't win any races off the line, but towing is no problem at all.

The boat is a 16'9" Tuffy Stinger (essentially the esox mag or similar to the Rampage). I believe the boat motor and trailer weight approximately 1500-1800lbs. I am confident the 3.6 could pull it, but think the 2.4 would have the RPMs pegged for most of the ride.

You'd be more than fine with the 3.6
