This isn't something I have ever done; I have always been a caster. I would like to troll suckers this year, both for northerns and muskie. Having not done it or ever seen it done, can someone walk me through the process? Also, any particular QS rigs that work better than others? Colorado blades necessary?

Thanks for any guidance.

Trolling suckers was how I was taught to fish for pike from my Grandfather and my Dad when I was just a kid. We trolled them along weedlines with a northland bucktail jig. It worked really well and we caught a lot of pike this way. Not sure how well it works for muskies but it wouldn't hurt to try.

Recently I've tried trolling suckers behind a planar board with a quickstrike rig. I had a lot of muskies attack the sucker, but I could never hook up with them. It's like they felt the board and just let go. It's definitely a good way to get your sucker away from the boat, but hook ups are hard for me. Maybe other's have had more success with this and can chime in.

Where you want to troll suckers will dictate how you troll them.

It's not trolling in Vilas. It's " position fishing ".;-)

I do it 1 of 2 ways. I either Lindy rig them with about an 8' snell with a single hook rubber banded to their nose. I do this on the outside weed edge. Only problem is sometimes you can't get those 10-14" suckers and you can only get 8" suckers. With the large suckers sometimes the walleyes chow them down, they are trophy walleye for sure just not intended target. 2nd thing I do is run a quick strike rig under a bobber. I run that through the weeds. My 6 year old landed 2 20+Lb northerns in 15 mins. One of those days, had 8 muskie follows but no takers. Went to bait shop after lunch and talked the lad into fishing a sucker minnow behind the boat to pick up one of the follows, he got some dandy pike. Take it for what it is worth. Stoney wolf productions released a new DVD called Trophy Pike Tactics and in that video they do a nice job covering sucker fishing.

Troll them slow in back of your prop wash(where it ends) on each side stagger them to see if they like it closer or way out. Quickstrike rig weedless as described on other post about sucker rigs. ( I hate small hooks!)
9 ft xh TI rods Good reel, 80 lb line
Now you know it all!
Game on!

While this may not be directed to the troll style you may use today it still applies. When I first began musky fishing we always trailed a sucker out from the boat while casting when drifting across a large weed bed on a bobber. When it became legal to back troll I used Russ Smith quick set rigs. Early season and the fall and cold fronts the sucker made the day. In September I lost a 50in plus on a Hog-Wobbler. The next day a cold front came she took my quick-set sucker and measured 51 1/2 inches. My point is suckers are still a productive method and don,t seem to used as much today. The price of wild suckers you cold buy a steak dinner. But i only use quick-set rigs to many fish die on single hook rigs.
