I would like to hire a guide for Cass Lake and I need some recomendations please.

Also, can anyone give me some general starters for the middle of June.

Finally is the Hotspots map the best map for the lake?

Thanks, Ray

Brian Jones of First Choice Guides. He works out of Birch Villa. He has a website out there to look through.

Don't let Steve Cady fool you. He guides on Cass as well and is quietly producing some big fish.

Looks like the guide aspect has been covered. If there is a better map than FHS, I haven't seen it. Regarding June, Cass is clear and cold, so consider down-sizing lures and moving a bit slower at that time of year.

There are quite a few guys guiding on Cass these days, and most are good. I would recommend Steve Cady if you want to have a great time on the water, and learn the lake. Never fished with Mark Windells, but a friend has and said he was great. Also, not sure if Dan Craven is guiding this season on Cass or not, but he is a great option if he is.

Not sure what Cady's new phone number is..(call me you knucklehead!)

Mark Windells-218-586-3565

Dan Craven-218-547-2869

Hope this helps.

Southshore- The Shady one definitely knows where the Cass hogs hang out. Just be wearing your raingear if you're standing on the dock or in another boat when he pulls away from the dock The shady side of the moon is also a frequently observed sight on Cass, you may want to wear some type of eye protection.

As for the FHS map for Cass Lake-> #L137- It's great because it has the local names for all the lake features + GPS Coords. Not to beat up on the FHS folks- for hydrographic accuracy, I'd recommend you also get the latest MN DNR maps for Cass they show a lot of fine detail that the FHS don't. But they don't have local names, etc. Here's a link to the MN DNR website- http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/lakefind/index.html

Type in Cass Lake & then click on "get lake data" The search results window will show a lot of lake data info catagories w/ check marks- just click on the check mark & it will take you to the data/information, f.ex the Maps check mark will get you to the maps for Cass. Some are old
They also have vegetation & bottom composistion maps. The latest primary contour maps you need for Cass are b00410011 & b00410021. These were completed in Dec 1999. I found the MN DNR maps to be pretty darn accurate. Hope the FHS folks up date their Cass Lake map soon- there goes some more money;-)

Sportsmans connection also has a map of Cass (marked by the good folks at Thorne Bros) Once again the details are based on an old MN DNR survey and are not as accurate as the most recent MN DNR maps.

If you're plotting your own expedition to Cass , get all three and compare them- it's worth the extra $$, time & effort.

Have fun! Cass is definitely a good Muskie lake & a lots of fun to fish.

I saw a few of Cady's Cass Lake fish, he does OK on that puddle! Ted Roos is a good stick, too, and produces some pigs every year. Is Ted Gwinn guiding Cass at all? He is another top stick in the area, and a gentleman, too.

Jason Smith,
If you can get him. I wanted to pay him after a day out on Cass Lake during the Fall outing last year, got to net the 40+ pound muskie he has in the photo album, 48 1/2 inches of big lady...
He's a Wisconsin guy, but he's been there before...

Othwise I would recommend Musky Nut, ask for Treat Daddy. But watch out: he guides only to try selling his "glide baits". Good for walleye, I got to admit...

Later,
PapaJoe

OK, So it was a cheap shot, I apologize, I think Treats will be an excellent guide. His real name is Shawn Kellett, you can contact him thru MuskyNut.com. Don't know if he guides for Cass Lake but since he lives in Minneapolis, I bet he'd go if the price was right.

Also, I suspect Cady would be a good choice, but use HIS BOAT.

Have a groovy day,
Papa
