| just wondering what the gear difference really means,
comparing a Calcutta 400d to a revo toro nacl?
is one closer to a more "power reel" and another the the "high speed"? |

Location: Yahara River Chain | If all other things are the same (gear size, pinion size, spool size, etc.) the 5.4:1 would be the reel that would put more inches on the spool per crank. I would also look into inches gain per crank as a factor. A bigger reel can have a lower gear ratio but may put more line on the spool per crank. |

| In the long run the difference between a 5.4 and a 5.1 is pretty negligible to me. I've used both and the gearing is probably the least of the variable factors that would influence my buying decision.

| I have a Abu Garcia Record 61 with 5.3:1 and a Calcutta 401D with 5.1:1. I love the Calcutta. |

Location: Hayward, WI | I also look at how many inches per crank the reel picks up more than anything. With that said, if two reels had similar line pickup rates, I think I'd lean towards the one with a lower gear ratio as the gears might hold up better and be smoother.
Then again, quality of the reel will play a big part there as well. As with anything, lots of variables at play.
So, in general, the difference between a 5.1 and 5.4 reel will not likely be that great when talking about most standard musky reels. |
