So decided to buy a Humminbird 859C HD combo and mount it on the bow of the boat. I'm considering attaching the transducer to the trolling motor via the adapter HB sells but I'm curious to hear from other who have done something similar. What did you do with the transducer cable? It can't run down the shaft for the motor as it doesn't go through the collar. Also, I assume it can be tricky reading the sonar as adjust the trolling motor would also move the transducer cone? Maybe I'm over thinking this?

sonar cone is round you turning the motor will make such an insignificant diferance you wont notice, as far as the cable thats for you to decide, but i know many people have mentioned that they suck on electric steer motors but cable drives they seem to work fine

Don't your trolling motor have a built in transducer?

Humminbird recommends running the cable on the outside of the shaft, which will get you into a lot trouble when you're using spot lock. I did mine this way and it's been great. http://www.walleyeworkshop.com/

The video that Yooper posted is how I installed my transducer.

I bought the HB adapter, and then decided that the transducer was going to be ripped off the first time I hit a stump or some rocks. I decided to get this shield instead. http://www.transducershieldandsaver.com/home/transducers?page=shop....

I think it is worth the extra money. The transducers are $260 to replace.

I'm going to try a DI transducer on a standard PowerDrive this spring...I'll let you know how it goes.

Let's just say I'm optimistic about the outcome.

I put a Elite 7 with DI on my trolling motor last spring. I mounted onto a motorguide wireless with a trolling motor bracket and zip tied the cable at the top and bottom of the shaft to allow raising and lowering. i also made a loop from a key ring that the cable slides in so it won't get caught in the bracket arms of my motorguide. The down imaging will work just fine.

Thanks for the info guys. I now have a new Bird 959 DI on the console, and one on the bow, with the Ethernet connection. I believe that I will need separate Lakemaster chips, as that info cannot be passed through the ethernet? I currently run one on the console.
I believe that having DI on the bow while I am up there fishing will help a lot since my boat is 19 ft. But I can switch over to both units being on the transom transducer while searching/cruising. It's my goal for this summer to have this figured out.

I just went through the same scenario. I got a Powerdrive off the cabelas showroom floor for a great price. The problem is it did not have the universal sonar. I am currently having the parts switched out for the Universal Sonar unit.

Having any kind of extra cable there was just too inconvienent for me. I think the whole gig is costing me about $250 including the install.

Yes, you will need two separate chips.

Just take it out on the water and play with it. Get your pre-sets in place, and you'll have 99% of what you want to do at the push of a button.

You're going to love it; enjoy!
