I was reading the instructions on the back of a Poe's Jackpot and it said "attach either with a swivel or directly to the line." I've been using it with a leader. Does using a leader reduce effectiveness?

Nah. A leader doesn't reduce the effectiveness of a Jackpot. Works pretty well with a regular leader. And single strand leader seems to keep the back treble from hanging up on the line.
