Location: peoria IL | Hi all,
I am new to the sight, but love it so far. I was hoping that I could get some advice on a new rod purchase for the upcoming season. I am looking for a good all purpose rod and cannot decide between the St Croix Avid 6'9" or 7' medium action or the G-Loomis 7' medium action. Is the St Croix worth 50 more $? I have no experience with either brand, so any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Question is: what are you planning on using the rod for? Jerkbaits, crankbaits, topwaters, etc etc....

Both St. Croix and G Loomis make great rods. The problem is in a lot of cases they are technique specific. For instance you would not want to through heavy Jerk Baits with a 7' medium you would need (at least for the Loomis) the 6'10" Heavy. If you are more specific towards the application you will get some great advice.
The days of an all purpose rod I think are gone, but if you can only go with one look for a Heavy power rod. |

Location: peoria IL | Yeah, sorry about the obscurity. I will mainly be using in-lines, top raiders and jackpots, with the occasional squirley burt. I know that there is a rod for every lure out there, unfortunately I cannot afford all those rods at the moment. It sounds to me like a 7' MH rod like the G Loomis musky rod or the St. Croix Premire 7' MH will serve my purposes. I really just wanted someone to make a decision for me! Thanks |

| If you want a rod for what you described, its hard to beat the 8' St.Croix as an eveything rod. That 7'6" Avid is sweet but priceie, and will most likely do everything you need. I feel that the shorter the rod the more bait-specific it is. Longer will get you alot more places then shorter. Just another opinion! Handy |

I fish mostly with G Loomis and I would Highly recommend them. The thing is you will probably be happy with either. St. Croix makes a great rod too. If you get a chance find someone who fishes what you are looking for a see if you can borrow for a couple of hours. |

Location: oswego, il | The 6'9" st croix will throw everything. I assume your talking the avid when you say it's 50 bucks more. The st. croix premere is cheaper than the loomis.
The medium action rods will throw the lures you mentioned but if you get into heavier or glide baits, you will want the jerkbait rod. |

Location: Kentucky | I used to have the 7' Loomis and really liked it as an all-around rod. The grip is narrower (1" instead of 1.25) so some people like that and others don't. I agree with Handyman about the rod length. Longer is more versatile. I've never used 8' but 7'6" is nice for me. My brother has the 7'6" Avid and it's an excellent rod. If you can afford it, I think you'd use it forever. If not, the 7' Loomis or 7'6" Premiere would be good choices. You might consider used ones too. Can get some good deals if you post on the forums what you're looking for... |
