FYI--A new law requiring all children under the age of 13 to wear an approved life jacket while aboard recreational vessels became effective December 23, 2002.

Ranger- no, U.S. Coastguard, makes it federal--all waters controlled by coastguard regulations!

Thanks Ghoti, not a bad law, and one certainly easy to live w/. A child can't be replaced for sure, and better safe than sorry!

For some goofy reason, i thought that already was in effect. Oh well, i guess the kids will not have to make a change then.

With this law in effect, those who have kids which are effected should make a point to carry their own life jacket with them. The jackets are very specific on the allowable weights of the users. Most kids grow like weeds, this would keep the correct size kid in the right size jacket. From the Coast Guard's perspective, wearing a jacket which is not the correct size is no different than not wearing a life jacket at all!

I have always done this anyway. It's kind of like making them wear seatbelts...they don't always want to do it, but know that they should. Now it's the law.
