| Hi guys,
I usually cut all the hooks when I catch a musky and I'm buying replaceable hooks for this up coming season and am wondering what size(s) I should get. I was wondering if you guys can help recommend what size(s) I should get. I usually use globes, creepers, toppers, hawg wobblers, ghost tails, Cowgirls, phantoms, suicks, bobbie baits, etc......
What size hooks would you recommend buying for a universal need of replacing cut hooks on the above? Thanks |

Location: Grand Marais, MN | of course it would make sense to just replace every hook you cut with the same size hook. In reality though, last couple of seasons I just got some 5/0 and replaced just about everything with those, pretty universal/dynamic hook size. |

Location: WI | Best thing to do is get a variety of sizes. I would put the biggest hook you can while keeping the same action. Go to big and you can wreck the action Especially with top waters. I do tend to up size hooks on baits when it makes sense but i would recommend doing it on the water so you can get an idea of before and after.
My local musky shop sells 25 packs of mustard hooks. I will usually get a bag of 3/0, 3/0 long shank, and 5/0. I also replace split rings with good quality ones.

| I like the Gamakatsu magic eye hooks. Small barbs so you rarely if ever have to cut one. They are expensive but it saves time and your not leaving shards in every fish. |

| You wont be disappointed. Super sharp, super strong and very fish friendly. God forbid you take one in your hand it will be easier to yank out or push through. |

| Not exactly on topic...sorry...but what about baits made for salt water use? You know, where the hooks are coated with a silvery stuff ( maybe zinc ) not like the dark hooks you see on fresh water baits. I'm always curious whether I should swap them out or use them? Actually, I'm always searching off shore stuff to find something skis haven't seen a thousand times this week. |

Location: Pewaukee, WI | Because that type of hook does not rust out, I'm very leery of using them in the event I have to cut them off in a Musky. I have always swapped them out for a bronze hook myself, but that's just me. |

| Those hooks are made for corrosion resistance more than sharpness. They don`t hold a point as long. |

I agree that the 5/0 is pretty universal for muskie hook replacement, definitely my #1 as well. My preference is the Eagle claw 5/0 4x, but the last few years I've been leaning more toward the 7/0 and 8/0 Mustad #3551 when fishing larger baits for larger fish. I typically don't like to use anything less than a 4/0 myself, but if you're fishing water with an average size under 40”, I think a 3/0 is a good choice. What I look for in a quality hook is; mating it to the lure, strength, and correct gap for the size of fish I'm likely to encounter, my normal minimum standard is 2-5/0s (vs 3-3/0s for instance) when targeting 50” plus class fish. Regarding the cadmium plated hooks, I don't use them either but mainly because of the extra weight associated with the heavier/thicker 5x strength, they are certainly strong enough, but I would rather go up a size for the wider gap if the lure can handle it. | Gamakatsu makes an incredible product. strong and sharp. The last five or six years I have been flattening the barbs on everything. I think i am getting better penetration and better hookups. Easier on the fish. Yes I may have lost a couple of fish because the barbs are flattened. Not enough for concern. |
