| Hello,
Slowly getting more gear in the sport and am curious how many rod/reel combos you would take along (or do take along) if you could and what they would be.. Not looking for specific brands/models.. just length and action of rod with what gear ratio and inches/turn you would use for what presentation. Have found info accross the board, and much of it is outdated- like using short poolsticks for everything.. Looking for something like this:
Jerkbait combo:
7.5-8 foot Heavy rod
6.3:1 gear ratio
Bulldawg/heavy lure rod
8 foot XXX Heavy rod
4.3:1 gear ratio
Burning Bucktails
8 foot Medium Heavy rod
5.4:1 gear ratio
This is just a made up example- but in a perfect world, what all combos would you have, how many, for what presentations, and what specs would they be ideally? Again, not looking for specific brands and models of gear- just the ideal size, action, gear, etc. Thanks! | |

Location: South-Central PA | I've narrowed it down to two outfits that allow me to throw any bait. If I'm traveling, this is the ideal two-rod setup. When I'm fishing near home, I throw in the third rod.
Large baits (cranks, jerks, gliders, blades, rubber)
8'6" XH, Fast action
4.6:1 hear ratio
30" / turn
Small baits (cranks, jerks, gliders, blades, rubber)
8'6" MH, Mod-fast action
6.4"1 ratio
30" / turn
Optional 3rd rod:
Jerkbait / Glider rod
8' XH, Fast action
6.4:1 gear ratio
30" / turn

Location: Minneapolis, MN | It's hard to not go into specifics for reels as it's not just about IPT or gear ratio, it's a combination of both. A Tranx PG has a 4.6 gear ratio, same as an Abu Winch, but the Tranx brings in 30 IPT vs the 22 of the Abu. Also, a Calcutta 400D has a gear ratio of 5.1 but only brings in 27 IPT and the Abu NACL 6.4 brings in 31 IPT but a Saltist at 6.1 brings in 35 IPT.
Having said that, I currently have two setups:
9' XH rod
4.6:1 with 30 IPT
Big baits and blades
7'6" H rod
5.0:1 24 IPT
Mainly for jerk baits but also for smaller baits and topwater
But ideally I would like to have 3 setups:
9’ XH with a Tranx PG for big blades, big plastics, and big cranks
9’H for smaller blades, smaller plastics, smaller cranks, and top water; pair this with a 400D, NACL 6.4 or anything else in the 27-30 IPT range
7’6”H for jerk baits and gliders; paired with same reel as above

those will be my go to rods this year
also in the boat have 6 old set up from 6' TO 7'8" all with TE'S
Also have 4 trolling rods only take two of them unless i go where You can use more then one line. If you have the room take them all it would suck if you break a rod and don't have a replace ment with you do i use them all no. But there there if I need them. | |

8.5' h, (6.4 size 50)= 30.9 IPT with 80# fast presentations, large blades and large topwaters
8.5 xxxh (5.4 size 60)= 26 IPT with 100# slower, larger baits ie. rubbers and big blades, deep divers

1. 9 ' Predator XH Calcutta 400 D for rubber, big baits and all purpose
2. 8.5' SC Sling Blade Tranx PG for blades and cranks
3. 8.5 SC Long Ranger Revo Toro for tops, small blades and smaller suicks
4. 7.8' Predator XH Revo Toro HS for jerk baits and wtd tops | |

| If they'd stop making new rods, reels and lures each year I could tell you the perfect combo!
I got by years ago with a 7' bass rod for blades/inlines and a 6'3"XH pool stick for jerkbaits, using some cheap Abus
But,
The 7 has grown: 7'2" -> 7'6" -> 8', and finally a 9' Ti MH (which may be an XH soon) with a Curado 300DSV.
The 6'3" has grown, too: 6'3" -> 6'8" -> 9' XH (way too much rod for jerkbaits) -> 7'6" XXH Ti with a Curado 300E.
The 2 setups above are plenty, but I still bring a 3rd: 7'2" / Abu D5 for small lures and jigs.
Gear ratio... I've never cared much about this statistic. As long as it'll comfortably pull and cast without backlash, I'm happy with it. I can crank faster/slower as needed.
It comes down to comfort/efficiency, money, and bragging rights at the dock. Is it fun having $1000 of rods/reels in the boat? Of course. Required? No.

Could you get one to do both, of course, but it will likely be good to great at one and mediocre at the other. This is why you see guys sporting 6 combos. Necessary? Of course not. But does it make a difference? You betcha!

I understand that. My question is, what would those 6 combos be ideally? I'm nowhere near having 6 combos, but can try to make current purchases with future purchases in mind. If you have or could have 6 combos (or however many), what would you look for for what presentation specific rods. Thanks for the feedback all. | |

Cowgirls.... 9' XH Shimano Trinidad. .
Smaller blades, jerkbaits such as Wades Wobblers....9' XH Revo Toro 60HS
Topwater, Gliders....8' 3" Revo 60 NACL...
Rubber and super models. .. 9' XXH Revo Toro 60 5:4
These I have found works well for me and all can do pretty much as another with some minor adjustments if something should break down...

8'6" xh w/ nacl60 5.4 change from pwr handle to paddle it can do anything
8'6" mh w/ nacl60 6.4 love for moving small blades and smaller baits quick
7'8" h w/ nacl50 6.4 anything walk the dog gliders/topwaters

| If you want to burn bucktails including 10's, you need more than a mh setup. A 9' h or xh will pay dividends whichever reel you put on it, especially in the 8. The only other thing I would change, is go longer with all your rods. Once I did, I can't go back. They are so choice. | |
