Upgrade my electronics and its between:

Gen2 8 w/SS
Gen2 7 Touch w/SS

Both of them after the rebate, cabela points and the $50 cabelas coupon will cost the same.

Is the touch screen and the built in SS worth the smaller screen?

My vote would be go big screen. Are buttons really that hard to push?

Big advantage on the touch screen is naming waypoints, you will get a keypad to do this instead of having to scroll thru the letters on a at a time I have 2 gen 2 hds 7 on my boat. Screen size is fine. My only concern with the touch screen would be durability with exposure to sun and weather. Check out youtube. Lots of video and instructions on these units. Touch screen does look nice and less intimidating without all those buttons. That being said for the same price I would probably do the touch screen.

Yes, touch makes the naming of waypoints/routes/trails much, much easier. Also, scrolling back to observe what you've passed by on the touch is much easier and faster. You will also find moving around on the chart much easier and faster on a touch.

I had one touch and one button on my boat --- I got so fed up with trying to touch the button's screen to make a change, I simply surrendered and am ordering a new touch!

Partially true, Dan, but I normally have 5 regions on my screen at any given time. If it's on Sonic/music, a page arrow back changes the tune I'm playing; chart, I move the chart. Yes, if I'm on SS or sonar, then you're correct. My luck, I'm on one of the first two!

Well went with a hds7 touch with no SS to start with. Thinking I will be looking at a 9 touch after messing with it some today. Might take it with me in the morning to see how/if its any quicker then my gen1 5 in the deep water fishing for lakers.

While boat shopping last summer the dealer talked me into the HDS 9 Touch Gen 2. I was going with the 8, but after getting the 9, I'm glad I did. The boat came with a HDS 5, so I moved that to the bow and have the 9 on the console. I recommend the same, move your hds 7 to the bow and get a new 9 for the console!

...kind of like buying TVs these days: there's no such thing as "too big" of a screen! Enjoy your new HDS's!!!
