What is your go to bait in the Spring, the first bait you will take out of the box and throw at those early season Musky's.
After talking to Steve Worrall, I think this year I will be making a change and going to the jig and creature.:) |

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | When the fish are ON, I am inclined to reach for the 8" Shaker or the Mag Dawg.
When they're off (which is most of the time) I'm more prone to reach for either a glow baby dawg or 7" bomber long "A" mag slowly twitched (will go side to side then). And of course, a 6" HR shaker never hurts.

These are in no particular order but I have had good success using.
Creatures
Twitched Minnow Baits like Slammers and Hawgseekers.
6-7" gliders, usually Undertakers or Lil' Phantoms.
Smaller 5" bucktails like Mepps Musky Killers or tinsel tails. |

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | The most productive would be: 1)The Slammer twitched with pauses.
2)The Undertaker
3)Mini Power Probe
4)Husky Jerk
5)Mepps bucktail
This is the order that works for me, the Husky Jerk moves up to the top with a Slammer under cold front conditions, the hang time of the Husky Jerk seems to trigger lots of fish but the dead rise of the Slammer also puts lots of fish in the boat. I let the fish tell me what they want by their mood that time of the day, how agressive the follow will determine what I use next.
My number 1 bait is the sucker for opener, just puts fish in the boat every opener. I don't even cast opening weekend at all, just drag meat. After the opener its back to the list. The opener is a real zoo on Pewaukee Lake, boats everywhere, the fish get spooky, this is why I drag meat for two days, just can't argue with sucess. Last years opener we lost a big muskie at the boat, caught a 40 1/2 inch muskie, caught a 19 inch small mouth and a 28 inch northern all on meat in 6 hours of dragging. |

Location: Leech Lake, Walker, MN. | I go to a 6 inch Reef Hawg, next would be the Spring Dawg. I am going to use more plastic/jigs this year. Or a Muskie Candy. I also use a small Phantom, and a Mann's minus 1.
Good luck, Murph |

Location: Lake Vermilion Tower, MN | Hi All,
Bucktails and spinnerbaits take a
top spot for me.
Hair is the number one option in cold water, here on the Big V.
#5 Mepps, Muskie Candy, 3/4oz bass sized spinnerbaits and a Big Hair jig, tipped with plastic of some kind. These all will work well at one time or another.

| 1)Bucktail most of the time to cover water and look for active fish, probably Black depending on water clarity maybe fire tiger.
2)Small Reef Hogg/Small Sledge
3)Jackpot for throw back bait
All of these baits produced fish for me this year already

Location: Wausau, Wisconsin | My favorite opening weekend bait I came across this spring and am quite sold on the Slippery Sam Jr. by Slowie Tackle. For the central and northern Wisconsin area I prefer the brown tail with the copper blade from all of my experiences losing smallies to muskies. I have always been a sucker for soft plastic bodies throwing Slug-Gos, and Spring Bull Dawgs. If I can see the fish I will throw a slow retrieve lure like the two I just mentioned. One thing that I have not seen discussed is when the water temperature is extremely cold and unusual for the musky opener I'll burn my lures as fast as I can. I learned this from PWT angler Chris Gilman with his "snap jigging" technique for walleyes. The reaction strikes you will get may suprise you.

| Justin, do you use any special rigging with the sluggo? Do you put any weight in the tail for extra erratic action? Is the single hook enough to get good hooksets? Do you set the hook immediately after a fish takes it?
Thanks
