I understand we are to have four full "Blood Moons" in 2014 and 2015. From what I read they are bibilical for the Jews and the event has only occurred seven times since 1 AD. I think the first one is in April (15th maybe)? Do you think this event will be any different that the regular full moon? I personally caught my first fifty on full moon with it under foot.

I would say it depends whether it is an anomonalistic month relative to the apogee and perigee. The selenographic colongitude a.k.a. the longitude of the moon's morning teminator--will, I suspect, have some influence as well. I would, of course, pay particular attention to the moon's ephemeris on this day as you previously mentioned. Given our circumstances last month, intercalation will not be a factor this year.

Not sure what a blood moon is. I'm interested...

I did just find out from a watchmaker that the northern hemisphere and southern hemissphers have the opposite moon cycles. A full moon in the northern hemisphere means the southern hemisphere will have a new moon phase going on.

I can't see this being true. Did you call B.S.?

I know it's off topic, but I'd hate to see a statement like this go unchallenged. But if the watchmaker is right, I'd hate to keep living my life as an idiot. I need to know.

PGreg -------- fish as much as you can ,,, if you ONLY fish when the moon is "perfect" and you catch fish ,, then you have fallen to your own self-inflicted self-fullfilling prophecy --- "I catch fish when the moon is perfect" --- had a friend that only fished during the moon's "major" period ,,, he caught fish during the "major" period but missed out on other fish during a "non-major" period ----- just fish as much as you can ,,,, good things will happen ------ jim

If you add up the number of days considered "good moon days", i.e. full moon plus 3 days on either side, dark moon plus 3 days on either side; each quarter moon and one day on each side, you have 2/3 of the month!

Dagnabitt, now I know why my wife plans those summer vacations to the lake on the 'other' 1/3 of the days in July. She's seemingly in another hemishphere half the time though, which should give me slightly better than a 33% chance of hitting it out of the park.

Yep, better fish as much as you can.
And the northern / southern hemisphere thing.....ha! I had a guy try to convince me once that he had such a strong telescope (it WAS pretty strong) that he could see the moon rotating if you watched close enough. Dare you doubt Pink Floyd!!!!!

Know what's sad? I was taught in elementary school that when the moon is partially-illuminated, it's because the earth is blocking the sun's light and casting a shadow on the moon. So the new moon was said to be times when the earth totally blocked the sun's light from reaching the moon, and full moon was when the earth wasn't blocking any of the sun's light from reaching the moon.

And so far whenever I ask someone what they were taught, that (the above) is it. And it never takes more than a few minutes before they're like "wait, that doesn't make sense". Darn [some] teachers.

Moon stuff...

I do know that the water going down the drain circles in the opposite direction in the Southern Hemisphere. I observed this just after purging my body of an excess of the poison known as tequila. Maybe I was just seeing things backwards.

I didn't call BS. I was trying on a $250K watch in his store while having the conversation. The watch had northern and southern hemispehre moon phase movements on the dial. I figured if he can sell and repair that kind of watch, he knows what he is talking about.

I'll ask my sister who teaches Earth Science to confirm...

Just draw a little diagram of the sun, earth, and moon. That's all you need.

The only difference would be that while in the northern hemisphere a waxing crescent is on the right side, it's on the left-hand side when looking at it from the southern hemisphere.

A full moon in MN is a full moon in Argentina.

The moon rides closer to the southern horizon when looking from MN, while it rides the North horizon if you're in Argentina.

But that sure sounds like a fancy watch!
