I posted this in the wrong forum originally...

I am looking forward this year to fishing more at night. What are the "trends" for night fishing? Color? Size? Lure type? How late into the night? Do day spots translate to night spots?

Cant wait for that blind figure eight hit...

The last couple years I stumbled on to a nite bite in the fall. Last year I was able to key in on it and didnt start fishing it untill after sunset. Moon rise and set were important but slow presentation I think was a real key. Night bites are awesome. Be safe!!!

I pretty much go for the vibration, I don't worry about the color. I'll give the fishing partner at top water prop bait and I'll toss a double cowgirl and retrive it so the blades are just spinning.

My success has been with blades, lately 13's retrieved slowly. Color I've gone with black and blues during new moons and bright colors or colored blades chartreuse or blaze orange colors during a full moon or brighter nights.

I would up the size of other baits for more vibration and an easier target at night. Make sure your eights are nice and wide so it's easier for the fish to hone in on the bait.

Day spots are just as good at night.

There are many variables to night fishing. My experience is limited to late June to about the first week of Sept. I favor dark calm nights for my favorite surface baits, but slow down, sound is the trigger at night, sight is a lessor part of the muskies strike trigger at night. Quiet evenings with no action are not indicators of night activity. I have seen everything dead till 11 or 12 at night and then turn on big time. Lakes with heavy summer boating traffic during the day are choice.

I had some real surprise at night including a 40" musky landing in my boat after jumping behind a surface lure next to the boat after missing it twice. There is nothing in the outdoors as thrilling as a musky strike next to the boat night. A clean pair of underwear should be standard equipment.

I started night fishing in the early seventies and have kept records on each Muskie (338).....here are a few of my experiences:

Moon phases are just as important at night as during the day

Larger fish on average at night

Larger fish generally on surface baits at night

Dark of the moon provides the best fish, especially on mid lake reefs

Slow is good, slower is excellent

Instead of figure eights at the boat, erratic retrieve ten to twenty feet out produce more strikes at night

I have only caught one northern at night in 44 years and I have never caught a Hybrid at night

when bass are hitting lures at night Muskie activity will be poor

North wind during the day produces good action at night generally, my three biggest fish

Just thought I would chime in, your mileage may vary.
