| Can`t you just buy extra cables and a suction cup transducer and use any unit? If the rental has no battery you can pick up an ATV deep cycle battery that will run the unit all day and only weighs 4lbs. Bring zip ties and should be no problem. |

| I rent boats as well and put together a portable gps/sonar unit. A lot of rentals only have the basic fishfinder. I use the suction cup transducer mount, which has held solid over several trips, and have a sealed lead acid 10 ah battery. You want a sealed battery for a portable unit, as you do not want a spill. A guy on here gave me some advice about making a portable box, but I went with a 5 gallon bucket. Not fancy at all, but works and is cheap. I have the battery in the bucket and can hang some baits I am using on the inside of it and simply attach the unit to the bucket with wingnuts for easy removal. You can also move the bucket portable unit to the bow for when you are casting. Having the graph on the bow this summer really helped with boat control on the structure and finally getting some fish. The battery in the bucket saves you from having to run wires to the cranking battery. You will not want to use the trolling motor battery, due to the power surge issue and/or interference. Also, I wouldn't want to be putting any more drain on the cranking battery on a rental boat, as you don't know what shape it is in, which is why I got the 10 ah battery. You can get a battery and charger for around $40. |

Location: New Jersey | I have the Humminbird 345c Portable. Thing is awesome. I used the hell out of it until I got my own boat and then I used it on my boat until I got a permanent unit. Used it on rental boats, canoes and even bought the ice transducer and still use the flasher mode on the ice. Has a suction cup transducer, full color and a great carrying case that fits in a bucket. You will not be disappointed. |

| I have the older 385ci Combo portable from Humminbird.
The newer model is the 386ci Combo portable.
They both have a color 3.5 inch screen, sonar/gps combo, and preloaded map.
It is $450 retail.
You also have the ability to choose a model/screen size in the 700 level or below.
The 5 inch screen size and below will fit into the black portable case.
This will add about $150 to the price of a listed unit, but will give you more options.
It is up to you what price point you choose - and the features you need.
