For all of you serious trollers out there, what kind of leader do you use??

As I'm getting ready for open water, and as my trolling rig nears completion, I wondered why lots of people are using flurocarbon leaders??  Do you really see more strikes with the clear leaders??  Or do you use Flurocarbon for other reasons??

I just got in some heavy duty 60" solid steel leaders.  I do have a few braided ones too.  And one or two trolling Flurocarbon leaders as well.

What do you use and why??

Thanks,

Steve Hulbert

The fluro will stretch, trolling at high speeds with steel leaders is taking a chance at something breaking.

I use flourocarbon leaders for trolling too. For one, the fish will roll in the leader and a steel one will mark up the fish. Have not had that problem with the flourocarbon or had any failures.

How does fluro stand up to abrasion resistance? I do alot of high speed trolling around rocks and have to use steel leaders up to 4 feet long to avoid line cuts. Does anyone have experiance using fluro around rocks?

Thanks
Cory

Flourocarbon has great abrasion resistance. I spool my trolling reels with it too and it lasts all season and will still use it this season too.

Fluorocarbon trolling leaders have really made my life a lot more fun on clear water like Lake Erie. That means I'm getting bit a lot more often! For me, on clear lakes, lures behind fluorocarbon leaders have outproduced lures behind wire by nearly 3 to 1. It's very durable and I've had no problems or failures so far (been using fluorocarbon for 3 years). I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference on really stained water or lakes with a heavy algea bloom, but I already have it on all my trolling outfits, so the only time I use wire is when I know I'm going to be pounding rocks with my lures. Heavy wire still holds up better if you're going to be dredging up chunks of granite.

So Jim,

Why do you think Flurocarbon out-produces other leader material??  Because it's a lot less visible??  Because your lures run better??  Or what??

People like Doug Johnson say that visible line means nothing....in fact, he likes using hi-visible line I've heard him say (like bright orange).  After fishing with Rich Collins, he said he doesn't worry about the fish seeing the leader or line either.

So Rich, why do you use Flurocarbon leaders??

If you guys say they catch more fish.....I believe you, but I want to know why you think it's so.
