I'm looking to get everyone's opinion on gear ratios. I only have two combos that I am in the process of upgrading. I currently have a 5.4 and a winch. If you were only going to carry two combos which gear ratios what you have? Not looking for brand suggestions but actual ratios. Thanks ahead of time.

5.4:1 and 6.4:1, also just had my winch gears changed as it was too slow for my needs.

Just go buy two Calcutta 400bs and fish! Don't worry about the reel of the month club or the gear ratio of the week. After you get two solid rigs then go buy the latest and greatest that week, then when you find out its not for you, put it one ebay or the boards like everyone else and sell it . At least then you still have two reels you like. Why do you think so much of these latest and greatest reels are for sell. Just my opinion.
By the way I'm sending this from sunny Calif. where its 70°, spent yesterday sturgeon fishing in delta. No fish but great day on water. Used my Saltist. Not looking forward to home in Mn next week.

Can't really say gear ratio because of the whole line pickup/effort element. A 4.6:1 Tranx PG picks up line a lot faster and easier than a smaller reel.

I'd keep my Tranx PG and either stay with Curado 300E, Calcutta 400B or 400D.

I've fished muskies for about 7 years with reels that had around 5.1:1 ratios - picking up about 24" per crank. Still don't have a fast one but I think at the moment if I had two to choose from I'd look for one that picked up about 24", and one that did about 35-36. Should be able to be pretty versatile with that.

I agree. I think the 5.4:1 is a great all around reel for different applications, and the 6.4:1 for jerks and rubber.

So help me understand this please as I am just in the learning process of what I should have. I agree my 5.4 can throw just about anything, but I should be looking for a higher speed reel for big rubber and baits like the Phantoms?

I use the higher speed reel Tranx HG for big rubber when your ripping and jerking it picks up line fast. So when . A fish hits there is no slack in the line and you feel more hits.
