Location: Minneapolis, MN | Is the 400 B considered too slow of a real for WTD baits? I seem to recall someone saying you want a high speed reel. I don't throw WTD style baits often, maybe twice last year, and so I'm not looking to invest a lot of money in a setup for them. I'm probably going to be geting a Tranx PG this year to pair with my new rod and that will be used 99% of the time, and so I was thinking of just taking my 400 B and putting it on a 7'6" cabelas musky rod my dad used last year before upgrading to a St. Croix this year. |

I think people have forgotten that the calcuttas b's were once some of the best muskie reels out there and are still a great option. Ten, fifteen years ago they didn't really have high speed reels as we know them today and Im sure they walked the dog just fine |

400B is plenty adequate for WTD's.

Faster retrieve is all the rage, but not a must. The 400b will work just fine. A faster gear is nice, but as said, "slow" reels have worked for a long time. My only reel for years was an Abu with similar gearing to the 400b and pretty much fished everything with it. |

Location: Hayward, WI | So far I don't own a reel faster than a 400B, and haven't had any problems with WTD baits or any others for that matter.
I think fast reels have their applications and I'm thinking about picking a speedy one up, but they certainly aren't as necessary as some would lead you to believe.

Exactly.
Love My HG Tranx, But 400B and Curado get the nod 75% of the time. |
