What would you recommend for a short fall trip? We would likely only be on the water for a Thur-Sun and then return home. Distance to travel obviously weighs in but its not a show stopper. Would love to here opinions on optimal dates for this trip as well.

Illinois, but like I said, not real consumed with how far we have to travel. Obviously, lakes right north of the border allow us to increase time on the water that would've otherwise been spent driving further north, but we are open to about anything.

In the fall you could never go wrong with one of the flowages in Norther Wisconsin.

Perrault Falls area is pretty standard for our group. We fished L. Manitou last year which was nice because it was so close to I-Falls.

Thanks Matt....some in our group have made a fall trip to Hayward in the past. We are likely looking to cross the border for the fall trip though. I would've stated that in the original post, but frankly we are open to any suggestions for this short trip. Thanks for the input.

So you have 4 days.
I recommend somewhere that has several lakes in close proximity, in case one is turning over or just "off". A good variety of lakes is nice too, so on a bright calm day you can fish stained water or small water on a windy day.
My 3 favorite locales for variety of waters to fish are: Walker MN, Mercer WI and Hayward WI. All those areas have clear, stained, big, small, action and trophy lakes in close proximity.

Oops, thought you meant the WI/IL border.

If you're looking for a GREAT Fall trip-----try St Clair------plenty of numbers---troll,cast,jig---whatever you like to do----- it's there. Only about a 5 to 5.5 hr drive from Chicago--- with a shot at a true GIANT. Good luck out there!---SN

Not over the border, but: The Cass Lake / Bemidji area offers a wide variety of waters. Plenty of resorts to choose from and only about 30 min. from Leech lake.
