Location: Madison Wi | I have noticed that all the talk is about Low Profile Reels and high speed reels. Does anybody use the good old 6500C, 5500C, or 7000C or have they gone by the way of the 57 Chevy. I use mine a lot and still have ones made in Sweden. Are these reels used or has everyone discarded them? |

Location: Wisconsin | Great reels, and really unbeatable at that price point. I have 2 that I bought back in the early eighties and they are still kicking! They are a good general purpose reel with the proper gear to cover just about everything. Some of the newer reels offer gearing for a more specialized technic and comfort that is hard to beat, but also at more $$ |

| Clammer summed it up For the Price they are Great Reels, I've used them for 20 Years without problems. But I did clean them after each season and do any maintenance necessary. There will be some Haters out there but I personally liked them, And like life itself as time passes so do changes. That being said, then came the Calcuttas, Lunas, Trinadads,Okumas, Avets,Revo Toros, Curado,Tranx, and Lexas.......So it's only natural that you see one that catches your eye that is Bigger, smaller, faster, slower, more powerfull, casts better, smoother, Better Drag etc, etc, etc. SO You Buy One or Two.
Are they made better ? some are,some aren't, Will they last longer ? some will, some may not, Do they do what they were advertised to do ? Some Do, some Don't. Do they Cost two to Four times More Yes they all Do....... It all comes down to what you are looking for in a reel, and how much you feel comfortable spending for one. If you have the older Abu Garcia, Try it and see if you are satisfied with the reel, if not you sure do have a lot of replacement reels to choose from..... Mike |

Location: ON | I use 5500's for trolling. They have no space in the arsenal anymore. I expect them to last a couple years with light to moderate use. Definately not the reel you want to be trolling daily with. |

Location: Sycamore, IL | I use my older Abu's for trolling and some live bait as well...to make them last longer trolling it has helped to thumb the spool before you reengage the reel or on harder pulling baits use the star drag to set your lines. |

Location: Minnesota: where it's tough to be a sportsfan! | I have all my old 6500 C4's, several on rods still in use. Others are in the boats as backup reels. I can't remember when the C4's came out but the next year I was able to get one. Still in service! Outside of a PAW here & there and maybe a wormgear, I do not recall anything more drastic. I even bought a couple more for the G'kids for $35/each. (money in the bank) |

Location: Otsego, MN | I prefer the round reels but my hands are a bit larger/longer than average. They are just more comfortable to me... I have found myself slowly replacing my old Abu reels with higher quality one but my 6500's have lasted several years and if maintained should work great for years to come. With that said I use a better real with improved gears and internals for throwing larger profile baits. I use the 6500's for small jerkbaits and small bucktails and topwater. |

| I can only use them for special applications such as muskies or catfish. When bass fishing, it is hard to go from low profile to round on a day fishing. |

| I have used the 6500 series reels for trolling for many, many, years now without problems. And aside from the very Quiet line out alarm Can't beat them for the Price. |

Location: Madison Wi | Thanks for the feed back. I read up on all the new reels and get ready to up grade to a low profile reel, but my Abu's are all in great working condition. Some of the reels I have are older than dirt and still work great. The 7000's are great for big baits and show no wear. I would like a Tranx but 500 is a lot to pay for a reel.
I will stay with old round reels until they give out or I hang it up. |

Location: MN | Good topic - been wondering this kind of thing myself. I don't have experience with the low profile reels or some of the nicer round baitcasters but I've been using 5500 C3s for the last few years (around 40 fishing days) and they seem to work ok.
I used a 7000C3 for many years when I didn't fish much and it was solid but huge and difficult to palm. A couple years ago I got back into muskie fishing and picked up 3 5500 C3s used off ebay for about $40 each. I cleaned them and put power handles on them and they seem to work pretty well. I pull double 10s over half the time so it hasn't exactly been light duty.
The only issue I've had is likely my fault - the seat of the reel busted off from the rest of the frame on a hookset. This doesn't seem to be a common problem so I'm guessing it was because I used too much upward force on the reel and not enough on the rod - I generally palm them and that particular rod has a fat grip. Next summer I'm going to force myself to use the foregrip and see if it happens again.
Even if you have to replace a part here and there, they are pretty cheap overall. At this point it's not worth it for me to spend $200 on a reel but maybe if I try a Revo Toro or snap another frame I'll change my mind! |

Location: Contrarian Island | IMO one of the best reels ever made to this day are the 6600 CL Morrums..I still have 3 or 4 I use a lot... they hold up as good or better than most new reels made today... I have sold a couple off in the past for 200-225 on ebay... guys over in Europe love em! |

| The old 7000 series last and I still use them for casting big baits. I don`t palm the reel when casting big stuff anyway. The new ones have a lever and are pretty much for trolling. The old 6500s are good but they don`t last nearly as long as 7000 series. If you can find the old 7000 buy em. |
