I've read through a handful of threads already posted in here and checked google for reviews, but I was hoping to get some additional insight on a few places my dad and I considering fishing out of in mid-August this coming season. We both have been musky fishing for many years, so we'd likely get a guide on the first day and be out on our own the rest of the week.

We're currently trying to decide between Witch Bay Camp, Tamarack Island, and Frolander's. All appear to be in different regions of LOTW from one another.

Our plans -
Boat: We don't think we want to haul our boat up there, but would if we needed to, so we're moreso considering resorts that have nice boats already outfitted for musky fishing. All 3 resorts listed above have boats that would suit is well.

Location/Fishing Pressure: By this I'm referring to how remote the area is. We'd prefer to fish in water that doesn't get a lot of pressure and we'd like to see more wilderness than other boats on the water, but of course we want to be on good Musky water so that brings about the next topic...

Musky density: We all know catching a musky is never a guarantee, but is the musky fishing significantly better/worse in one of the above listed area over another that could make this the #1 deciding factor in choosing a resort to go to?

If anyone has experience with these locations and could chime in, it'd be much appreciated. Thanks a bunch!

Fars as fishing pressure goes Ash Rapids is about as good as it gets for skies and has the biggest wallys on the woods.

Howdy....haven't been to any resorts mentioned.....get the Canadian hydrographic maps of all 3 areas.....look at the depths and complexities of each....pick the area that suites you best.....I've fished Sabaskong area north and east of Morson....water is tea stained with 2 feet or less water clarity when we were there in July....made me sorta nervous fishing the rock bars....never made it west of Morson tho....I've fished close to Witch Bay waters...mostly south of there.....the water depths seem deeper up that way.....I fish out of Sioux Narrows....mostly a walleye trip for us...not many fish musky from there it seems to me.....for muskies we go to Whitefish or out past Yellowgirl......about 25 miles.....I've got maps of the Frolanders area.....looks like interesting water....generally shallower I think....lots of musky looking spots....I think current too, as the big water flows north thru there.....there's a reason the musky schools fish there.....no idea on the fishing pressure......but I would use the spots that other musky guys are fishing as reference points and find other similar spots to fish....or go back to them when they are empty.....I guess I'd pick the NW Angle just because I've never been there before......make sure you have a good GPS with a lake chip and a Canadian Hydrographics map.....it's mighty big water.....hope this helps.....good fishing

Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin
All 3 of those areas of the lake will have great fishing.

With that being said, upon looking at the different rates of the lodges, to me it looks like you could take 2.5 trips to Tamarack for what it would cost for one week at Witch Bay. I know where I would choose....

Will be busy by Frolanders, the Angle gets pounded nowadays. We went August past 4 years. Switching months this year.

there is really no way for the angle to get "pounded".. one road in one road out and limited lodging (the same number of lodges there was 10 years ago).....are the lodges full in July and much of August sure, but a bad week is still 15-20 fish boated with two guys...... some of the spots I consistently catch fish on I've never seen a boat on, millions of spots to fish.. I guess I have a different definition of "pounded".

Wouldn't call 15-20 fish boated a bad week...

If you are comparing muskie densities in these 3 areas I'd say that the Angle and Sabaskong are pretty similar in terms of numbers. Both areas also obviously have a trophy component. The NE section by Witch Bay has good muskie fishing as well, but I'd say that overall muskie density is more moderate by comparison. In my experience, the average size of fish you encounter in the NE section is a touch higher though. From an upper-end trophy standpoint, all 3 areas would be about equal.

So, for example, all things being equal, for a week in the NW Angle and/or Sab, you're odds are pretty good to catch 15-20+ with most in the 38-44" range, with solid chances at a fish or 3 (or more) in the 48-52" range; by comparison, the same week in the NE section out of Witch, you're more likely to catch only 10-15 but with most in the 40-46" range, with good chances at a fish or 3 (or more) in the 48-52" range.

I am by no means an expert, but can give you my opinion. Been going to LOTW for about 14 years. I would say the break down is 10 weeks in the angle, 4 weeks up further north by Witch Bay, and only 1 week near Tamarack. Here is how I would rank the 3 areas from my experience for fishing "pressure" (if there really is such a thing on LOTW compared to other musky lakes in the states) and density of muskies:

Fishing Pressure with 1 being the most pressure:

1) Frolander's
2) Tamarack
3) Witch Bay

Density of muskies with 1 being the most muskies:

1) Frolanders
2) Tamarack
3) Witch Bay

From what we have learned, you are going to trade off numbers of fish to get away from some of the boat traffic.

I've stayed at Tamarack the last two years. The fishing is excellent. I've fished LOTWs for 9 years, and it's best I've seen out there. That said, I think you are comparing apples and oranges here. Witch Bay is more than twice the price, primarily due to lodging and amenities. The owners of Tamarack (Todd and Kim) are truly good people. They bought Tamarack two years ago, and it was in serious need of repairs. They have been working on improvements, and I've seen progress.

It's just a matter of what you are looking for. If you are good with a fishing camp that's rough around the edges, for a reasonable price, then Tamarack is probably your place. If you are looking for a beautiful cabin with coffee service, AC, daily cabin cleaning, etc, then go to Witch Bay.
