| Hi.If this isn't appropriate here I assume Jason or Steve will remove it but here goes:
One of 6 documented spawning areas on Leech Lake is threatened by development. The DNR,as I understand it,has allocated $200,000 to purchase the property in question and is presently appraising and negotiating on it.(will someone please paste the DNR letter that tells more about this?)It will take much more to purchase it.MI clubs and others have pledged $1,000's of dollars but more is needed. This is critical to insuring the future of the Leech Lake strain of muskies.
A group of us is setting up a raffle to help raise $$.Tickets will be sold at a couple booths at the upcoming Mn Muskie EXPO(thanks George Wahl!).Tickets will be $5 apiece and 100% will go to this purpose/project.
We also hope to figure out a way to sell tickets to those interested that can't make the EXPO.Prizes will continue to accumulate til late Sunday at the EXPO when the drawing will take place. You need not be present to win.
I expect a 100+prizes.So far we have:a 3 day trip to Big Detroit Lake in Mn that is for 2 people.Accomodations at the Holiday Inn on the lake included and you will be guided by 3 VERY good fishermen that know the lake well. This is courtesy of the Fargo/Moorhead chapter of MI.
Lakewood MI edition tackle box from MI International;3 copies of the book 'Muskies On The Shield' and 2 Grinder Spinnerbaits from yours truly;Rod/Reel combo from Bass PRO/Pete Maina;Lures from Musky Mainia Tackle;2 Triple D's from Esox Research Co.;2 custom baits from Muskie Treats and much much more.We are just starting to roll so stay tuned.
This is a very good opportunity to win a nice prize(or two:-))and help a great cause. Please consider this.
By the way,all donations welcome.
Thanks.

| Hi Dick,
I'm trying to get to the Blaine show, and will look to purchase some raffle tickets. Leech is a great body of water, and needs protection. Glad to see the MN DNR is trying to be pro-active. I don't suppose you could send some of those guys over to WI? See you there! |

| Hi.Thanks for the interest.
Shep hope to see you there!Of course this comes about at a time of huge State deficits and an announced 29 million DNR budget cut but our DNR just keeps trying to do the best they can. They appreciate our support and I appreciate yours.
Matt I think/hope that Leech guides, business's and resorts will just offer assistance here if they want.I'm confident there will be offers of trips etc coming.Clearly benefits them directly.
Thanks.

Location: Walker, MN | FIVE MILE POINT, LEECH LAKE
PROPOSED AQUATIC MANAGEMENT AREA (AMA) ACQUISITION
Harlan Fierstine
DNR Area Fisheries Supervisor
07316 State 371 NW
Walker, MN 56484
218/547-1683
[email protected]
The proposed Five Mile Point AMA consists of 1200 feet of shoreline and about 30 acres on Leech Lake east of Five Mile Point. Located offshore of the property is 1 of 6 documented muskellunge spawning areas on Leech Lake. The spawning area was located by Bob Strand (retired DNR Fisheries Research Biologist) during the radio telemetry work he conducted with muskellunge during the late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s. The spawning area is in water depths ranging from about 3 to 6 feet. The bottom substrate is primarily marl (very soft) on which grows Chara (muskgrass). Chara is the perfect substrate for the successful development of muskellunge eggs. All documented muskellunge spawning areas on Leech Lake have the combination of marl and Chara.
During January, 2002 this office received an Army Corps permit application for a 36 slip boat harbor to be dredged in a riparian wetland. The harbor would serve future development on the 30 acres. Due to likely damage caused by concentrated boat traffic to the muskellunge spawning area located directly offshore, the DNR recommended denial of the permit application. There is no guarantee that the permit will be denied. Concentrated boat traffic would likely destroy much of Chara thus eliminating the substrate needed for the successful development of muskellunge eggs.
Because of the muskellunge spawning area the DNR Division of Fisheries has allocated $200,000 of LCMR funds to purchase the property to be managed as an AMA. Such a designation would protect the muskellunge spawning area for the future. The value of the property is greater than the amount of money the DNR has available. Presently several chapters of Muskie Inc, the Wabedo-Little Boy-Inguadona-Rice-Cooper Lakes Assoc., and Leech Lake Watershed Foundation have committed funds to help purchase the proposed AMA. All these dollar commitments will be matched by Reinvest In Minnesota (RIM) funds. More funds are needed for the purchase.
The property owner is interested in seeing the property purchased and managed as an AMA. Thus he is willing to hold off for a short unspecified time on any development plans to allow some time for funds to be raised for the purchase. He has enjoyed the natural resources of the Leech Lake area for years. Like anyone with an investment he does want to see a return for himself and his children.
The proposed Five Mile Point AMA is important for the future of the high quality muskellunge fishery of Leech Lake. Feel free to contact this office for more information.

| Hi.Those who can't buy tickets at the Mn EXPO can buy them through the mail as follows:Send your checks to John Skarie
25681 Co.Rd 149
Detroit Lakes,Mn 56501
The checks should be made out to 'Fargo Moorhead Muskies Inc'.On the memo line,or somewhere on the check, write 'Leech Lake raffle'.If not on your check, add a slip with your name, address and phone #.The amount of the check will determine the # of tickets that are entered in your name.Tickets are $5 apiece so if you send $20,you'll get 4 tickets entered in your name etc.
There also will be a procedure set up to buy via a credit card-hopefully by tomorrow.
Keep in mind you can also have a friend or someone you know thats going to the EXPO buy some for you.
Good luck!

Wow, Dick. You have amassed many great items in a relatively short time. And those guide trips are top notch. Kudo's to all who have contributed! And especially to you, Dick. I will be at the Blaine show, and I will be bringing extra money to buy more raffle tickets. |

| Good morning folks!Want to get the day rolling with a SUPER PRIZE.
Jeff Arnold of REEDS sporting goods in Walker,Mn has donated a Shimano Calcutta 400.Wow.Thanks Jeff!As many of you know Reeds supports many muskie causes and here they are again.Stop by the Reeds booth at the Expo and thank them.
OK,after talking to Jeff this morning I decided to try make this donation a little more special so I headed to the shed and removed one of my well used reels from one of my favorite rods. This rod was custom made for me by a friend from Wi after considerable pleading, begging and $$$.Its 8ft and the sweetest thing I've seen for long cast tossing of big bucktails, cranks, whatever.I even work jerks with it at times.A labor of love.(Fred forgive me,hurts me too!)
A super reel deserves a Super Rod.This combo will be fantastic.
Dick
PS Folks I've mentioned shipping charges before. For things such as this rod/reel they amount to something. If you win a prize like this and can't pick it up,consider offering to pay shipping when contacted.Save us guys some $$ for a good cause.
Any more prizes out there?
Todd-thanks for the bonus lures!!!

Location: Walker, MN | To all I just wanted to say a word about the Basin Bait from Kendal Klaus that was offered for the raffle. I was out trolling Walker Bay in late November, and I ran into Kendal he had just released a 47X25 that he had taken with the Basin Bait, these are huge deep diving baits unlike any thing you will find any where, Kendal hand crafts each bait and they take somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 hours to produce!

| Another morning hello!Everyone have a great day! We'll start it off here with a dandy new prize:
Guide Robert Brunner Sr([email protected]) has donated a full guide day on Lake St.Clair.Trip must be taken the last week in July this year. Some facts;Bob has been fishing St.Clair since 1929!!!Caught his first muskie there in 1931 on a cane pole(medium heavy action?:-))His P best is 52 lb 1 ouncer caught in 1974.Last year they put a 57 incher in the boat. Now,this is a CASTING trip, not trolling which we most often associate with that Lake. You may recall Bob was described as a legend a few years back in Musky Hunter-this is a real opportunity and privilege folks! Thanks very much Bob!

Location: oswego, il | I went to the sport show in green bay today and came into a whole bunch of giant bodies to make spiners with. I will make about 25 or so and bring to the MN swap meet next week. I will donate 75% of what I make from them to this cause. All I would like is to get back what the lures cost to make. You get a big spinner(some are so big you will only be able to troll them) and help the cause. Not to mention, you will have a unique lure, the likes nobody or musky has ever seen. |

| Shep,we'll chat about this at the EXPO.I have a couple 'yahoos'from Illinois staying at my house that weekend and we are an hour and a half away so not sure of the 'swap' but I'm going to try talk you out of that donation either way.:-)
Todd, thanks very much.Neat move and people like you make a difference.
Folks I just took a calculator and made a rough estimate of the value of the prizes donated so far.Tough cause I'm not sure of a few items but my best guestimate is that its in the area of $11,000 to 13,000 dollars!Lots of nice stuff to have a shot at for 5 bucks. Please take that shot!
I won't be hustling many more prizes this week cause of other committments but I'm sure some will be added.I'll also be 'working'the floor at the EXPO and know some more will be added there.Again consider donating a prize. If you have a new product you want some exposure on,donate one and we'll help,
I intend to be at the EXPO all 3 days so please stop by the Raffle booth and chat-I'll sell you a ticket or two!
