Hey all,
Doing some shopping around to get a muskie rod and reel for my daughter's birthday in March. Came across Tackle industries as a rod maker. I have no experience with them and a search here (6 months back is all the forum will let me do..) doesn't say much. Anyone have an experience they'd like to share? I have viewed their website and their products seem pretty innovative, just wondering what you folks have experienced.

Thanks in advance!

I have 5 and love each of them. Great product, great price and a top notch owner with great service. Can't go wrong with them in my book.

Judging from the website they seem to be very light weight even compared to st-croix rods. Is this accurate or is that a typo on the website. Can anyone compare the feel/weight/balance of say a 8.6' rod TI vs st-croix notwithstanding quality or fit and finish of the rods?

Which St. Croix? Legend, Premier, Mojo?

TI rods are fantastic (and as was already said, James, the owner, is as good a guy as there is as an owner and philanthropist for the industry) . But rightfully, I doubt you'll find anyone here on M1 that will suggest that St. Croix rods are anything but super nice rods. To answer the OP question. You'll be very happy with a TI rod.

The TI rods are great, especially considering the price. I have a 9' XH split grip telescopic and 9' XXH full grip solid and I use those rods almost exclusively. I also have a 8'11" (a 2nd with 1" missing from the tip) St. Croix Big Nasty Split grip.

I haven't weighed them, but I would say the weights listed on the TI site seem accurate as when picking up the TI XH VS the St. Croix, it isn't too obvious which one is lighter or heavier, though I think the Croix is a touch lighter - also more expensive.

The biggest difference between the TI rods and the St Croix rods is action. The TI rods are softer with more tip bend and the Croix rods are faster with stiffer tips. Which is "better" in that regard is an opinion that varies between anglers.

Love the Ti rods. Here's a comparison I did with them and some others, when I was in the hunt for some new rods a few years ago. Hope I did the link, right.

Oh, and I do have the XH that I mentioned at the end.

TI rods are excellent. I can get any blank on the market to build on and I have a TI MH, XH and XXH in my lineup along with an XH Lamiglas and a St Croix Big Dawg.

.

For example a TI 9' rod is stated as being roughly 13oz and St-Croix Premier equivalent roughly 17oz. That seems like a significant weight difference. How ever it seems almost unanimous that the st-croix has faster taper.

Like others have said, the action is a bit softer with the TI's which I like for bucktails and plastics. I will note (and no offense James), St. Croix does have the better warranty. Broke a Mojo and a TI the same way this year - let it slide under the boat cleat and lifted it.

Still, planning on buying another TI this summer because the value is just unbelievable.

I have four of the TI 9' telescoping rods and love them. Customer service is outstanding. My daughter has used one for years and loves it. (She prefers the split grip for casting)

Bought my first TI rod this summer and liked it so much, I bought my daughter one. She loves the rod too. Also, I think TI went to a lifetime warranty on their rods, but James can address that.

Bought my first TI rod last year through the auction Steve W was doing. Super nice of James to donate a rod and lure to the cause, btw.

9' XXH telescoping. Handles pounders WAY better than my Okuma XH 9', is MUCH lighter, and overall a much, much better rod. Landed my PB 53"er with it this summer, too.

I plan on buying nothing but TI rods from here on. In fact, the whole reason I logged on today was i was looking for James' username so I could PM him and tell him that I just bought one of the HOT PINK rods off of ebay... 7'6" MH and holy cow.. it s SECHSY. So, so beautiful. I cannot wait to get out and fish with it.

I was a little concerned that MH would be too flimsy, but it's pretty darn stout and I love it. I think it will be a perfect jerkbait rod

edit: to address the weight question - just based on holding St. Croix Legend Tournament rods in the store, i think the weight is accurately comparable.

I have both TI and st croix legends and premiers. I like my St croix legends best they are lighter and have better guides they are also far more $$$. The premiers and TI's are very close as far as weight and finish. If you are just starting out or what a more modeately priced rod you can't go wrong with either. Both are balanced and good values for the money. Hit a musky show and see what you prefer.

2 cents - Different guides on the new TI's make um even lighter in-hand and the tapers make even their XXH super versatile plus the 18" handles are a life changer.

Good news for you guys going to Milwaukee (and I think Madison too), St Croix and TI will both be there. Good opportunity to touch and feel both rods if your on the fence. I know its sounds stupid coming from the owner of Tackle Industries but its still a goal of mine to own a St Croix and I will soon. I don't think anyone will go wrong owning a SC or TI rod. I personally love using other companies rods and lures. Lets me see the good and bad in my own product lines and make positive changes along the lifetime of TI products. Change and innovate or die. Well, time for my other life to start and go make ice cream for the day

I switched over to all TI split grip telescopic rods about two years ago or so. My guests were wanting the splitgrips. Now I would not give them up. Landed a bunch of fish, love the extra long handles, and after all the abuse dished out to them by my clients, only one rod guide busted. I'd say they hold up beyond expectations. Hoping James will do a new rod with a multi-taper, fast action tip. I'm ready to order that at any time & many of them. I can replace allot of specialty rods with that. Jake

Just finished building 3 rods on TI blanks. They seem to be nice rods with good finish. Comparing TI to big $$$ St Croix is apples and oranges. There is alot of differences in how the blanks are built. Do you need F350 Grand Ranch 4 dr or can you get by with a standard cab F250? You have to justify that. Let fit, finish, bling and $$$$ be your deciding factors. Alot of people here have joined the rod of the month club. Fig rig, pick celebrity guide, pro series....Greatest rods ever! Great warranty. Where are they now? I still get those in for guide repairs, dont see many st croix or loomis. For what its worth, was in Thornes and Sidejack pointed out a new Loomis that the reel seat didn't line up with guides, by alot. So much for $$$ fit and finish. Hey Sidejack, just what are you doing with that 18" handle that makes it so life changing?

" I also have a 8'11" (a 2nd with 1" missing from the tip) St. Croix Big Nasty Split grip"

If you're suggesting the rods came from the factory that way, that is completely normal. My St. Croix Big Nasty measures 8'11 and 1/2". I called and asked a St. Croix sales rep as to what the rod spec tolerances are for production. I was told none of the Big Nastys are truly exactly 9', that most are between 8'11 and 1/2" and 8'11 and 3'4". The bottom measurement spec is 8'11" for production. St. Croix does this because to ship anything through FedEx less than 108" is around $30, anything 108" or over is $130. The rep assured me they nip the nominal amount off the butt-end of the rod and not the tip, as to not affect the action of the rod.

Again, TI rods are great. I have St Croixs and have used everything from Triumph to Big Nastys and for certain applications I like these, but for the money I dont think you can beat James' rods from Tackle Industries. Especially for bucktails, I think the XH is about the nicest rod I've used at least for me, for throwing blades there is. And you get to buy a rod from an actual person who actually cares about you and the product you are purchasing.

I have five and love them! I still have some custom made ones but didn't use them last year! I was impressed with the rods and should have bought more with the interchanging handles.
I don't like an 18inch grip! Just more grip to take out of a rod holder or get in the way!
I liked the fact he was catering to all!
I have caught 50 pluses on all them speed trolling and casting and no problems with rods and that's what separates a good rod for me!
