Apparently the Northern Pike spearing ban was lifted December 2nd. Anyone know about this?

It was lifted on several lakes, including West Battle in Otter Tail. Old News...

A guy my father in law knows (one of those stories, so take it with a grain of salt) said he had a mid to high 50's come into a spearing decoy on Eagle this year.

We saw a guy late-October who caught a 52. That lake has a few beasts in it. My avatar is from there.

Good for you, glad you got some of the smaller pike to eat. We need more of that in Mn.

You should go hit up Charlotte in the west metro (~25 min away). Clarity in the summer is 15' and that lake needs some northerns to be harvested. Pretty lake too.

If you want Pike in the west metro, you might want to leave Eagle alone and head to Fish Lake. Its right off Bass Lake Road maybe 2 miles west of 494. Fish Lake gets very little fishing pressure, is loaded with Pike in the 2-6 lb range and does have Pike in the 30-40 inch class. Fish is well suited for ice fishing because the Pike tend to be concentrated along the drop-offs. Just set up on the drop-off and you will be on the Pike. That is the lake I would head to for Pike spearing and/or ice fishing.

Ha sometimes the best part of spearing is just seeing the fish not spearing them big reason I speared eagle is I wanted to see muskies never seen them spearing before, the day I saw 4-5 and a couple pike was probably the most fun I have had spearing ever, and I also have my spot for muskie opener picked out :D I have speared fish before also not yet this year I was told it was very dirty but have in the past a few times, you can also find some fat bass in that lake

Fish Lake got kind of dirty when the Bass Lake construction was going on, but that is over and I believe that it has cleaned up since then. It sure is a good lake to set up tip-ups though. One doesn't even need to go far from the landing or public beach either. The important thing is to find the drop-off. But just like any lake, the Pike don't always bite either. One day you can be running from tip-up to tip-up and another day one can be lucky to get two or three flags to go. Its just an option for Pike.

Definitely do it. It's a fun lake. You can usually average a northern every 10-20 casts. Been trying to get a 30 incher for a couple years now and it's tough. The bass though..... October 2012 I thought I got my 30+ northern. 23.5 inch largemouth in a kayak. Can only imagine what it must be like for those southern guys and their 10 pounders.

Note on the launch. It's can be pretty awful. Don't try to get it in one shot. Break it down with three shots and you'll look like a pro compared to the guys who jack knife their trailers.

For the larger Pike on Fish Lake, think very deep edge and near the bottom. The smaller Pike tend to be up more towards the top of the drop-off while the larger fish are usually down near the deep edge of the drop-off. On lakes like Fish, I like a strong hook, 3/8 to 3/4 oz jig tipped with a 4 or 5 inch plastic of some kind. I have had good luck with the Power Bait and Gulp baits in various minnow and grub forms. The presentation is absolute key to being successful and boat positioning is very important. Keep that boat just outside the deep edge, cast along and just out from the edge, let the jig drop down and then use a slow up and down motion during the retrieve. If I'm hooking to many weeds, I just go to a heavy, weedless Bass type jig head. Sometimes we catch some nice Bass that way too.

Good luck.
