OK, What is it about Ebay that makes people do stupid things. I was watching a GLoomis rod that was up for bidding. The Rod retails new for $190. The rod in question on Ebay was 1-2 years old and required the winning bidder to pay $20 for shipping and insurance. Well when all the bidding was said and done the total cost of this used rod exceeded the cost of buying it new from R&H or a local retailer.

Are people stupid or what?

Happens all the time. They get caught up in the "game" of bidding. Each new bid is only a couple more bucks. Add up all those couple buck incrimental bids and the desire to "win" and you end up over paying if you are not careful.

There's a couple HR's on there right now going for more then retail when several retailers have them in stock.

ps. As a seller, be wary the guy who over bids for an item. That's where counterfeit money orders come from. Only take PayPal on suspect transactions like that.

Ebay, use to be a great place to get some good deals. Not anymore, its no different with Muskie fishing stuff or anything else. These people are paying for somthing that all they have seen of it was a picture, and could end up with a piece of junk, when instead they could go to there local retailer and buy it brand new for the same price, and dont even get me started on that pay pal BS, what a joke that is.

I've sold a bunch of musky related items on ebay and I for one appreciate any people who bid on my items. I buy 95% of all my stuff for personal use from retailers (and pay full price). I usually by too many lures, don't use them and try to recoup some of my costs. If people want to pay retail or higher prices its fine with me. Ebay charges some pretty hefty fees for sellers too (10-20% of the item prices) so even though some of the prices look high the sellers aren't getting every cent of that money. I don't feel bad about people paying higher prices and I know the people that buy my stuff are happy so who loses? I've sent musky/pike related items to every state in the US and and at leat 6 different foreign countries. Not everybody knows about the major retailers and some items are hard to get in regional areas which also helps drive up prices when bidders from certain geographic locations get involved. Other people are just plain nuts and money is no object. It is easy to get caught in bidding wars. I have gotten caught myself and while it is fun, I know I probably have overpaid for harder to get or limited availability items. If you're still looking for deals check the swap boards. There are plenty of good deals/trades to be found there.

Not much for deals on e-bay anymore. Lots of bidders and alot of people not using their heads. About all you really save is tax. I was looking at bowflexes too, same deal, save tax.

I'm one of those eBay morons! I've found many deals, you just have to wait and watch and know your prices. Don't be in a hurry to buy, you got all winter to shop. If you get caught up in the bidding war you might as well just go to the casino. I've also sold a lot of lures on ebay. I have people pay to my paypal account so it is sitting there available. When I buy, it doesn't have to come out of my pocket. Also if you buy multiple lures from the same seller shipping is very cheap. In my area the fishing stores don't have much selection in Musky stuff so I have to order from Thornes or Rollie & Helens and pay shipping anyway. I use the catalogs for price reference and only buy if is considerably cheaper. -lobi

Hey Mallards-n-Muskies -

I've bought a lot of your stuff on e-Bay <g>, mainly Hughes Rivers and Amma Bammas.  Good advice here, know your price and don't overbid.  Hard to let stuff go, but patience wins out.

I'm a moron too and I challenge anybody to a duel who says differently!
M&M, we've done business too. I've probably sold 20-30 lures over the winter. They get a week on the swap boards, and then they go to e-bay. I don't go for all the bidding BS though. I know how much I want for a certain lure and always put up a buy it now option.
There are people out there paying $60 plus shipping and more for HR's, when all they'd have to do is call around to retailers and buy them for less.
I check out e-bay regularly, and there are some deals. But you won't get sumthin' for nuthin'.

You guys just don't get it. No one is forcing you to buy or sell anything on E bay and yet you are still fussing about it. Just don't use the system. E bay is a good deal for a seller, it has made it much more difficult to get a good deal as a buyer, but hey, if that's the going market price on something either buy or pass. The going market price is whatever somebody, anybody in the world, is willing to pay. I have sold some stuff on e bay for surprising amounts of money, one example is a bunch of old ferrules and guides that brought in over $125, who bought it and exactly why they bought it eludes me yet but it had several bidders participating and there must have been some demand for it. I don't feel bad taking their money. I feel good.

Ksauer,

I have two non-payers right now. All I do is send them an e-mail stating when I expect the payment to be made (usually 30 days from the close of the auction) and if they don't respond I blast 'em with negative feedback and move on. I don't like to eat the fees but I don't know what else to do. Its just a cost of playing the game.

There are alot of times when there is no respose from the buyers and the money shows up in the mailbox with the shipping address enclosed.

I agree with Mallards & Muskies. I have bought a lot of lures from him and all were less than I would have paid retail including the shipping. Everything was in new or excellent condition. I have had the same experience with many other sellers on eBay. There are still deals there on muskie stuff if you look for it.

Yes, I've had a couple non-paying bidders, but you should follow the e-Bay instructions and notify the bidders.  I give 'em 3 e-mails, then start the e-Bay process, which basically means e-Bay nags them too.  In both cases, it worked just fine and I got my $$.

I've also bought several lures from M&M on ebay and everything has been settled fast and professionally. No hassles, just fast delivery after payment has been made.

just a word of caution on the bidding. If the lure has a reserve price, start low. If reserve is 100$ and you don't know it, and you put a max bid of 105$ because maybe you can't check out the thread regularly, ebay automatically raises your bid to 100$ because that's the lowest bid for which you are sure to win the item at that time. So beware. Start low.

I've bought plenty of things on Ebay with no problems. You just have to know what the cost + S&H is and what it would be on a new item and go from there. I just bought 4 Down East holders from a fellow on there (muskiefisher) that were in near perfect shape for $73 including shipping. He's a member of MI in central Ohio and seems to be a pretty straight up fellow.

I have been ripped off a couple of times for shipping costs lately. Last item I bought was a zippo and the guy asked 7$ shipping costs. When I got it, it had 2.90$ shipping costs on it and he sent it in a brown paper enveloppe, not even a box.

I got tired of E-Bay so I switched to Old-Bay. Sprinkle a generous amount on the shrimp or crabs and walk away a winner every time.

Hey I'm an eBay moron.

I have found it to be a great place to bottom-feed. Bid a pretty low amount, the price you'd be glad to pay (I watch out for high S&H and also peole who don't take Paypal, because that makes paying easy and hassle-free). I learned early on not to fall in love with an auction item.

Still, from time to time, there's thing I HAVE TO OWN:

Divani, think about what you posted above and tell me if you really think it's rational thought. The guy puts a reserve on it, below which he won't sell it. You put in a bid of $105 because I assume that is the price you would be willing to pay to get it. So then you fuss because E bay immediately puts in the $100 bid, clearing the reserve. Duh? How do you think a low bid will help you? If you feel it is worth $105 to you to get it, is it better to have someone force you up there or is it better to miss out on it? If the guy is firm in his reserve he simply won't sell it and may pull it and sell to private offer, so then you will miss out.

Once again, if you don't think it is worth more than X number of dollars don't bid more than X.

PapaJoe,

Thanks for the laugh. That is the most unique item I've ever seen. I'm still chuckling about that.

Perhaps EBAY has been delegated to the ox and a moron status...there are no right answers, there are no right questions...all is up for grabs; to the victor go the spoils, for which another toils....when the tea pot whistles, the water boils...land ho!
