I have a 2007 Ranger 620 and am wanting to upgrade electronics. Keeping price as the last determining factor, what are the pros and cons comparison between the two units. Looking at either 2 HDS 10's, 2 HDS 9's, or possibly an HDS 9 and a HDS 12. I have an HDS 8 Gen 1with LSS and like it, but need another unit so am planning on upgrading both. Looking for experiences with the touch screen units. Thanks

I have two HDS-10's. The large screens are wonderful and very easy to use. If you install structure scan you are going to need to install the box on your boat. If you get touch screen units the box is built right into the units. If money does not really matter probably a 12 and a 9.

Once you go touch, you will never look back. The pure ease of operation is well worth it to me. Want to keep track of your catches, follows or other notables. Simply enter waypoint and go to description. Type all the info you want fast by using the touch screen keyboard. Makes tabing to one letter at a time and entering it old school.
Prices did come down a bit but still not cheap.
As far as size, bigger is always better. Mainly because you can have up to four screens on at a time and they can get pretty small on a smaller unit. Second is if you have it on the bow the images will look even smaller the further away you are.
The only con is $$$$$

The biggest upside to me is the fact that the touch units have the structure scan module built into the unit. No need to mount a box somewhere else. That is super nice.
You could certainly keep your LSS-1 and upgrade to Gen 2 units and save some coin, but I dont believe the LSS-1 will allow some of the new struturemap overlays or other features that LSS-1 does or that is built into the touch models.
I really want to upgrade my electronics as well. Selling the old models help offset the cost of the new ones.
Lowrance dropped the price a few hundred dollars on many units (spendier ones) plus there are rebates going on right now.

the touch is very nice but one thing that drive me nuts is the touch lol .. if you have water on screen and go to wipe it off slides your screen to different pages also to put in waypoints with cursor alot easier with older unit other then that they are sweet... but i would never get one again I like the buttons better

Contact Lowrance, I spoke with some folks at the Lowrance booth at the Milwaukee Boat Show who were very helpful. As I understand it the HDS 9 & 12 have standard features that you would need to pay extra for on the HDS 8 or 10. All units are very impressive. Hopefully you don't have sticker shock.

If looking at buying a Lowrance it might be wise to wait about a month, that is when they normally come out with spring promotions. The Touch units are very user friendly.
