Location: Minnesota: where it's tough to be a sportsfan! | I would not use Floro. I make my own leaders for a reason no one to blame but me! Out of all the failures over the last 5-6 years, 100% are Floro. The stress at the point of the bend seems to be too much. For trolling I use nothing but wire. For casting I use ss straight wire mostly. I will use some floro still on smaller baits and on jig rigs etc... Just me |

| This is defintely a preferenece over right or wrong question. I'm just the opposite......no wire for me. I've got a bunch of failed leaders hanging on my garage wall, and their almost all wire. Mostly all failed at the bend/stress point. Not the case, for me at least, with flouro. I use 130# for trolling, and 150# to 180# for casting. Just like wire, you gotta check and change if it's damaged. |

| Seems lots of guys use 150lb Floro in the 3-4' range for trolling and 100lb floro or so from 9"-18" for casting. |

| I think most people are using 130# flouro for casting. From what I've read (not experienced) below that pound range and bite offs are an issue. I've had a 48+" fish in the bag with my leader in it's mouth and the leader came out unscathed. Now would I make a habit of this? No. But there is some on the water experience where Flouro stood up to the task.
I will not go lower than 130# flouro. I run knotless, wind-on leaders 130# on everything but the pounder rod. That gets 200#. For trolling I use a 5' Leader with crimps, also Flouro, I believe it is 130#. |

| I have John from Stealth Tackle make all my trolling leaders. For open water trolling I use 100# for small baits and 130# for the big stuff. I have him make them 60" Long
If I am in Canada or in a situation where I am hitting structure or rock I will run wire.
Good Luck,
Jeff Hanson

Location: Chisholm, MN | I use 180 pound flouro...just to be safe. They wear out after a while so I change them out if I feel nervous about it. Thorne Bros make the ones I use and they are affordable. I worry more about the snap than anything else. Make sure your using good quality. |
