Muskie anglers to host Indiana muskie summit

DECEMBER 18 – The 2014 Indiana Muskie Summit, a meeting designed to bring together avid muskie anglers and DNR officials to discuss the state’s muskie management plan, will be held January 18 at the American Legion Post in Fishers on 126th Street.

The event will be hosted by the Hoosier Muskie and Webster Lake Musky Club and will be open to the public. It will get underway at 9:00 am and conclude at noon.

Topics on the agenda will include an update on the DNR’s muskie hatchery operation and stocking program. A variety of other topics, including potential fishing regulations, habitat management, and fostering cooperative partnerships, will likely be discussed.

“The summit provides a great opportunity for folks to get together to talk about muskie fishing,” said Scott Law, HMH coordinator of the event.

“Our state offers some of the best muskie fishing in the Midwest and we want to keep it that way,” said Law. “The meeting will bring together DNR biologists who are directly involved with muskie management, fishing guides, avid muskie anglers, and any fishermen who may want to learn more about Indiana muskie fishing.”

“We are excited to be a part of this event,” said Bill James, the DNR’s chief of Fisheries. “It gives us a chance to showcase our program and maintain an important dialogue with muskie fishermen. We want to hear what they have to say.”

James said Indiana started its muskie management in the 1970s with stockings at Brookville Reservoir near Richmond. Since then the program has expanded to include 16 lakes and reservoirs across the state, due in part from support from muskie anglers.

Initially dependent on obtaining muskie eggs from out-of-state, the DNR developed its own muskie egg source at Lake Webster in Kosciusko County in the 1990s. Over one million eggs are now collected annually from adults captured during the spawning season. From these eggs, the DNR stocks about 20,000 muskie fingerlings each fall.

“As muskie fishing grew, so too did our relationship with muskie clubs,” said James. “The Hoosier Muskie Hunters and the Webster Lake Musky Club have been instrumental in working with us.”

Well, how does everyone who attended feel things went. I feel that if we can get the 44in passed for Webster, along with the larger size fingerlings, and releasing them in all the different spots, we are well on our way to an improovment. Also regulations on weed kill should help the little ones survive.

They were discussed at the first meeting, and were put into use already, except the size limit is in the proposal stage.

Have they ever considered stocking more traditional numbers instead of the five fish and stocking more and/or bigger lakes?

Does anyone have a current list of the lakes being stocked? I live in Evansville and drive all of the way to Kinkaid to fish since it is really my closest viable option.....not counting a couple of real small ponds/pits. Hopefully one day we'll see something happen at Patoka or something like that.

What are they doing with weed kill. This is the real issue.
